Technology: our bond in the future
SINCE Slovakia gained independence, Japan and Slovakia have developed fairly good relations, although there have been ups and downs in the past. Our trade reached $675 million in 2008. Although it decreased to $493 million in 2009 due to the economic crisis, it started recovering again in 2010. Forty-five Japanese companies are operating in Slovakia and have created about 9,000 jobs. However, taking account of Japanese economic power and the potential of both countries, these achievements are not enough. We have more room to develop in the future.

A GOLDEN circle inlaid in the path under Michael’s Gate, in Bratislava’s old town, displays the distances of 29 world metropolises from the Slovak capital. Two decades ago Seoul, located 8,138 kilometres away from Bratislava, was not there.
Korean flagships
IT HAS TAKEN only a few years for the Republic of Korea to become one of the biggest investors in Slovakia. Its flagships are the carmaker Kia Motors Slovakia in Teplička nad Váhom near Žilina and the electronics company Samsung Electronics, with production units in Galanta and Voderady. These investors have already drawn their subcontractors to Slovakia, for example Yura Eltec Corporation Slovakia, producing cable harnesses for cars, Mobis Slovakia in Žilina, and Dong Jin Precision Slovakia in Sereď.
Bratislava connects with Yerevan
ARMENIAN airline Armavia begins operating new weekly flights between Bratislava and the Armenian capital of Yerevan on January 24. The flights will operate on Mondays.
Health Minister Uhliarik under fire
HEALTH Minister Ivan Uhliarik has had a rather difficult start to the new year: first, local media reported that Czech hospitals were fishing to hire Slovak physicians en masse; then reports surfaced about Uhliarik’s purported preferential treatment of a pharmaceutical firm for which he had previously worked; then the Sme daily followed with a front-page article reporting that Slovak ambulance services lacked supplies for urgent treatment of patients needing transport.
High fines to discipline drivers
POLICE Corps President Jaroslav Spišiak says that high fines are currently the only way to force drivers who violate traffic rules to abide by the law.

Polish poultry repackaged as Slovak
SOME businesses in Slovakia are repackaging foreign-origin poultry even though they are not authorised to do this, according to several inspections initiated by the Agriculture Ministry, the SITA newswire reported.

Radičová halts rail company layoffs
THE PLANNED mass layoffs of more than 4,000 employees in the three state-controlled railway companies have been postponed. The Ministry of Transport, Construction and Regional Development must first elaborate and submit to cabinet a recovery plan for the loss-making railway companies, the SITA newswire reported.
Teamsters show off their horses
TEAMSTERS or draymen were (often) men who drove wagons or carriages first pulled by oxen, and later by horses, to transport goods and sometimes people along ancient trading routes. They were the predecessors of today’s truck drivers. The workhorses that pulled these carriages were always far different from full-blooded racehorses, and on January 8 their descendants tested their skills and strength along with their masters at the annual Turčianska Podkova / Turiec Horseshoe competition held in the village of Turčianske Kľačany.
Fico refuses to defend profit ban
FORMER prime minister Robert Fico, who is now deputy speaker of parliament, has refused to represent parliament before the Constitutional Court in a trial over a law that effectively bans health insurers from making profits, and instead forces them to return any revenues to the health sector.
