Judges win reimbursement; Justice Minister Žitňanská rejects their claim
ELEVEN Supreme Court judges have succeeded in court trial against Supreme Court over salary discrimination. The judges should be given €100,000 each in compensation plus a further €4,566 as a reimbursement for their costs, the Hospodárske Noviny daily reported earlier this week. The discrimination is supposed to have been caused by the fact that judges of so-called Special Court dealing with the most serious crimes and corruption were paid more in the past than other judges.
Civil Conservatives do not support increasing excise tax on alcoholic beverages
Conservative party OKS, a member of the governing coalition elected to parliament on the slate of the Most-Híd party, does not plan to support the draft bill on excise tax on alcoholic beverages if the Slovak Cabinet adopts one and submits it to parliament, SITA newswire reported.
Matovič at PG hearing told everything on corruption
Independent MP Igor Matovič, leader of the Ordinary People faction, visited the Prosecutor General's Office on July 29 for a hearing on corruption among politicians, about which he told the media earlier in July.
Unadaptable Roma family forced to leave flats in Čierna nad Tisou
Five Roma families from Čierna nad Tisou in Košice region on July 28 left their state-owned flats after a mutual agreement with the local authorities, TASR newswire reported. The town council claimed that the eviction was necessary because of the poor state of the flats, which may even have threatened the lives of the inhabitants.
Poll: Hungarian Coalition Party would get back to parliament
Opposition Smer party would have recorded a landslide victory in a general election if one had been held in the first half of July, according to a poll by Focus agency.

Prime Minister Iveta Radičová expressed "deep sorrow" at the sudden death of bishop of Banská Bystrica Rudolf Baláž who died of a blood embolism on July 28 at the age of 70.
Central bank: Efficiency of Slovakia's economy approaching EU average
Performance efficiency of Slovakia's economy has again begun approaching the EU average, with individual indicators improving more quickly than in most European Union member countries, according to the Analysis of Slovakia's Economy Convergence drawn up by the central bank, the National Bank of Slovakia.
SARIO sealed investments close to €260 million in the first half of 2011
The Slovak Investment and Trade Development Agency (SARIO) sealed investments worth €259.5 million in the first half of 2011, which could give rise to 1,500 new jobs, TASR newswire reported.
Number of foreigners working in Slovakia continues to grow
By the end of June 20,400 foreigners have been officially working in Slovakia, up by 3,000 people compared with the same period in 2010, according to data from the Central Office for Labor, Social Affairs and Family.
One in ten photo-voltaic power plants found faulty by regulator
The Regulatory Office for Network Industries (ÚRSO) has inspected 372 companiesoperating photovoltaic power plants so far; and plans to make 18 more inspections next week. Problems were found with some 10 percent of scrutinized companies.
President signs the Labour Code
Nothing now stands in the way of this year’s most important piece of legislation, the Labour Code, after Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič signed the bill into law. If the president had refused to sign the Labor Code and returned it to parliament the right-wing coalition, led by Prime Minister Iveta Radičová, would have struggled to approve it again.
Košice tax office continues to bring controversy
FINDING a building to house the Košice tax offices, the subject of a Finance Ministry tender after a contract was scuttled earlier this year over suspicions of cronyism, continues to bring controversy. In the most recent development, the firm owned by a party official from the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ), Ondrej Ščurka, who had signed the scuttled contract, has apparently won the tender – but only after his firm was the only bidder.
Norwegian killer Breivik: Slovakia least infected with multiculturalism
Slovakia is the country least infected with multiculturalism in Europe, Norwegian gunman Anders Behring Breivik, who has admitted killing 76 people in Oslo and on a nearby island on July 22, wrote in his 1,516-page manifesto entitled '2083-A European Declaration of Independence'.
Slovakia condemns attack in Norway
SLOVAKIA’S leading state officials have expressed their condolences to the Norwegian people, who have been in mourning following the bloodiest attack on the nation since World War II. Slovakia, however, has also appeared in relation to the murders in another context. Anders Behring Breivik, who has confessed carrying out the attacks and killing at least 76 people on July 22, praised the Central European country in his manifesto for having resisted the spread of multiculturalism.

Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič has sent a letter of condolences to Norway's King Harald V expressing his deep sorrow at the attacks carried out in the country on July 22.

Slovak Prime Minister Iveta Radičová sent a letter of condolences to her Norwegian counterpart Jens Stoltenberg on July 23 following Friday's attacks on Oslo city centre and nearby Utoya island.
Unemployment rate rises to 13 pct
THE UNEMPLOYMENT rate in Slovakia grew from 12.84 percent in May to 12.98 percent in June and was 0.46 percentage points higher than last year, the Central Office of Labour, Social Affairs and Family (ÚPSVaR) reported on July 20, according to the TASR newswire.

THE RULES that Slovakia will use when providing investment assistance to firms will change based on an amendment to the Act on Investment Assistance signed by President Ivan Gašparovič on July 18.
More Slovak exports to India sought
SLOVAKIA registered a negative trade balance of €89 million with India last year. While imports from India to Slovakia amounted to €160.83 million, Slovakia’s exports to India totalled €71.76 million.
