HN: Slovak state has plan to keep U.S. Steel
In its Wednesday, January 9 issue the Hospodarske Noviny (HN) economic daily wrote that the Slovak state already has an offer to prevent U.S. Steel from selling its plant in Košice.
November retail sales slumped by 2.2 percent year-on-year
Retail sales in Slovakia continued their year-on-year decline at the close of the year. According to data from the Slovak Statistics Office (ŠÚ), in November they decreased by 2.2 percent to €1.53 billion, while in October they fell by 1.8 percent and in September by 1.7 percent. The last time retail sales achieved annual growth was in May last year.

Social partners support new public procurement rules
The Economic and Social Council of Slovakia has expressed its support for a draft amendment to the law on public procurement prepared by Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák. However, representatives of both employees and employers had several comments on the proposed measures and agreed that before the law is discussed in parliament the tripartite will meet with Kaliňák to discuss possible changes, the SITA newswire reported on January 7.
Gašparovič sues blogger
Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič has submitted a criminal complaint against an unknown person for slander. The initiative came after publication of an article entitled Murders Among Us on the Blogovisko.sk website, in which the author alleges that the president may have played a part in the death of a forestry worker, the SITA newswire reported on January 8.
SDKÚ refuses to propose new general prosecutor candidate
The opposition Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) party will not propose a new candidate for the post of general prosecutor, nor will it participate in a parliamentary debate over such a person. Moreover, the party plans to boycott any new election, the TASR newswire reported on January 8.
Harabin collapses at Vienna Airport
The president of the Slovakia’s Supreme Court, Štefan Harabin, experienced sudden health problems while at Vienna International Airport on January 8 and paramedics had to be summoned, before he was rushed to hospital. His health condition was later reported to be stable, and he was moved to a hospital in Bratislava, the TASR newswire reported.
Defence Minister explains purchasing two L-410 planes without public tender
Neither Defense Minister Martin Glváč nor Slovak Army Chief of Staff Peter Vanek considers the acquisition of two transport planes L-410 for €9.8 million a problem. Glváč insists they are actually proud to announce this transaction, which has caught negative media attention.
Danube Wings recorded two-thirds’ increase in passengers in 2012
The Slovak air company Danube Wings flew a total of 122,791 passengers last year, which was 65.5 percent, or 48,580 more people when compared with 2011. Danube Wings acquired a new plane and also new regular flights last year, the SITA newswire wrote on Tuesday, January 8
Former PM Radičová to head to Oxford for media analysis project
Former Slovak Prime Minister Iveta Radičová (Slovak Democratic and Christian union-SDKÚ) is leaving for Oxford, where she will take part in an international project during a term at the University of Oxford. As she said in an interview for the SITA newswire on Monday, January 7, she arranged her participation in the project at Oxford for three months with her current employer, Comenius University in Bratislava.
Infamous fraud scandal falls under presidential amnesty
The scandal surrounding the non-profit company Privilégium, which emerged under the first government of Robert Fico (2006-10), will disappear from the criminal records thanks to the recent presidential amnesty. [A total of 753 prisoners have been released from jail after President Ivan Gašparovič granted presidential amnesties to mark the 20th anniversary of the establishment of an independent Slovak Republic.]

Nitra's regional government (NSK) on Monday, January 7, denied information that appeared in the media recently concerning the alleged misuse of the so-called Norwegian Funds in the modernisation of three residential health-care facilities for seniors under the remit of the regional authority.
Smer discussing 3 possible candidates for general prosecutor
The Sme daily wrote on Monday, January 7, that the names of potential candidates for the post of general prosecutor being discussed by the governing Smer party are Bratislava regional prosecutor Jaromír Čižnár, Special Prosecutor Dušan Kováčik and prosecutor Eva Mišíková, who ran for the post in 2010 supported by the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH), Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) and Most-Híd.
Slovak job centres offering over 500 jobs in the EU via EURES
Slovak job centres are currently offering more than 500 vacancies in other EU-member states for unemployed Slovaks via the EURES project, which is run by the European Commission under the remit of the Slovak Labour, Social Affairs and the Family Centre. The highest numbers of jobs are located in Germany (228) and Spain (100). Dozens of free positions are also on offer in Great Britain and the Netherlands, the TASR newswire wrote.
ERRC: Roma settlements removed under pretext of waste disposal
Certain Slovak municipalities may evict their Roma inhabitants and tear down their dwellings under the pretext of applying the Act on Waste Disposal, the Budapest-based European Roma Rights Centre (ERRC) stated on Monday, January 7. ERRC indicates that it is possible that international legal norms are being disregarded in such evictions.
SARIO closed deals for 18 investment projects worth €466 million in 2012
The Slovak Investment and Trade Development Agency (SARIO) finalised deals for 18 projects in 2012, with another 14 drafted projects awaiting assessment by the Economy Ministry and the government, the TASR newswire reported on January 4.
Debate over school grades heading to Constitutional Court
The restriction of access to school leaving exams for elementary school pupils pushed though by Education Minister Dušan Čaplovič in the amendment to the law on vocational schools is likely to go before the Constitutional Court at the turn of January and February.
