RTVS unhappy with TV news ratings
LUKÁŠ Diko, the new head of news at the public-service broadcaster Radio and Television of Slovakia (RTVS), has said he is unhappy with the TV ratings being achieved by the network’s news programmes. He added that the ratings for its radio news programmes were good, although there was still room for improvement, the SITA newswire reported.
Banská Štiavnica’s calvary now illuminated at night
THE CALVARY, one of the dominant features of the central-Slovak city of Banská Štiavnica, can now be seen at night. Starting from November 27, 2012, its Horný Kostol / Upper Church has been basking in the glow of floodlights each night, joining Banská Štiavnica’s Old and New Castles, which were already illuminated.
Teachers' strike to remain on hold
The strike by Slovak school employees remains suspended and will resume only if the Education Ministry does not include the teachers' unions' demands in its plans for the development of the education sector due to be submitted to parliament in March, union leader Pavel Ondek said on January 10. Ondek described an initiative by the New Teachers' Trade Union – a smaller grouping – to hold a strike during the forthcoming school-leaving examinations at secondary schools and Monitor tests at elementary schools as "non-systematic and inappropriate".
Kia plans to make 290,000 cars and 490,000 engines this year
Carmaker Kia Motors Slovakia plans to produce 290,000 cars and 490,000 engines in Slovakia this year, the company's chief executive, Eek-Hee Lee, said on January 10, the TASR newswire reported.
Slovakia ranked 42nd out of 177 countries in economic freedom survey
Slovakia came 42nd in the 2013 Index of Economic Freedom compiled annually by the Wall Street Journal and US Heritage Foundation, the TASR newswire reported on January 10, citing Tomáš Púchly of the F.A. Hayek Foundation, which acts as a partner of the survey in Slovakia.
Slovak murder suspect Mišenka arrested in Venezuela
Slovak citizen Viliam Mišenka, who is suspected of five murders in Slovakia, has been apprehended in Venezuela, Slovak Police Corps President Tibor Gašpar announced on Thursday, January 10. Gašpar said that Mišenka was apprehended on January 2 while walking on a beach on Margarita Island, the TASR newswire reported. Information about his arrest was provided by the Venezuelan branch of Interpol to the Slovak police on January 7, after Mišenka had been identified.
Amateur Slovak singer prompts debate over opening ceremony of ECOC
NEITHER the scheduled performance of British jazz funk band Jamiroquai, nor the various attractions organised throughout Košice, have prompted much debate over the opening ceremony of the European Capital of Culture (ECOC) 2013, the biggest social and cultural event of the year. Rather, it is the inclusion of Slovak amateur singer Anna Gaja, the wife of the mayor of Košice’s borough Sever Marián Gaja, who will perform two of her songs at the event, which has proven controversial.
Slovakia's trade surplus in November was €294 million
Slovak foreign trade ended in surplus in the penultimate month of last year. Compared with October, however, the surplus was lower. While in October the trade surplus was €513.5 million, in November it was €294.2 million, according to data from the Slovak Statistics Office released on Wednesday, January 9.
Cabinet agrees to postpone soldiers’ and police officers’ retirement by ten years
Members of the armed forces and police who have served for less than five years will be entitled to pension payments ten years later than their colleagues who signed up earlier, according to legislation approved by the government on Wednesday, January 9.
Constitutional Court accepts Jozef Čentéš' complaint
The Constitutional Court on January 9 decided to assign a complaint lodged by Jozef Čentéš, the general prosecutor-elect whom President Ivan Gašparovič has refused to appoint, to a judge-rapporteur, the SITA newswire reported, citing court spokeswoman Anna Pančurová. Čentéš’ complaint was delivered to the Constitutional Court on January 3, 2013.
Moody's rating agency casts doubt on Slovakia's deficit plans
Moody's, one of the three main international credit rating agencies, considers Slovakia's plan to squeeze its deficit below three percent this year to represent a challenge for the government. The Hospodárske Noviny daily reported on January 10 that the agency expects the Slovak public sector to achieve a worse result than the original projection of the Fico government.
Police arrest Slovaks involved in drug trade in Sweden and Norway
The Slovak police and their Swedish and Norwegian counterparts have arrested five people in possession of 150 kilograms of amphetamine and tens of thousands of pills used to produce the drug, Police Corps spokesperson Andrea Dobiášová told the TASR newswire on Wednesday, January 9.

Opposition parties submit joint proposal for parliamentary session on Čentéš
All five of Slovakia’s opposition parties – Ordinary People and Independent Personalities (OĽaNO),the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH), Most-Híd, the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) and Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) – on Wednesday, January 9, submitted a joint proposal to convene an extraordinary parliamentary session to debate the Jozef Čentéš case. Speaker of Parliament Pavol Paška is obliged to convene the session within seven days.

President criticised for rejecting Čentéš
PRESIDENT Ivan Gašparovič has opened another chapter in the knotty saga of filling the vacant post of Slovakia’s general prosecutor by formally announcing, in early January, that he would not appoint parliament’s chosen candidate, Jozef Čentéš, to the job. Čentéš immediately challenged the president’s decision at the Constitutional Court, arguing that he had failed to list any legitimate reasons for his refusal to appoint him.
Harabin already communicates, will be diagnosed on Wednesday
The condition of the president of the Slovakia’s Supreme Court, Štefan Harabin, has been stabilised. Harabin experienced sudden health problems while at Vienna International Airport on January 8 and paramedics had to be summoned before he was rushed to hospital. His health condition was later reported to be stable, and he was moved to a hospital in Bratislava, the TASR newswire reported.
Government changes rules for investment aid, again
Companies asking for state investment aid will have to prepare for new terms starting in April 2013. On Wednesday, January 9, the government approved the changes, as elaborated by the Economy Ministry.
