U.S. Steel to stay in Košice
U.S. STEEL Corporation will not sell its U.S. Steel Košice (USSK) subsidiary in eastern Slovakia. Representatives of the Slovak government and the US investor signed a memorandum confirming the latter’s continued presence in Slovakia, meaning that it will remain one of the country’s biggest employers. The Slovak government has been negotiating to get the firm to change its mind since last November, when it indicated that it was thinking of selling USSK.
Winner in Orava egg-decorating competition hails from southern Slovakia
THE WINNER of the 12th year of the national competition in Easter egg-decorating, Dezider Kremmer from southern Slovakia, was surprised and very happy to learn that he had been awarded the main prize for his puffed engraved eggs.
Chamois in Tatras fall prey to lynx, exhaustion
AT THE beginning of March, conservationists and forestry workers in the Tatras National Park (TANAP) found several dead chamois. Head of TANAP administration Pavol Majko and deputy head of the Štátne Lesy TANAP state forestry company Marián Šturcel agreed that the numbers were not alarming and did not represent anything unusual, much less a threat to the chamois population in the mountains. Šturcel told the SITA newswire that the total number of chamois who died recently is large when compared to previous years, but that the population of these animals is also its greatest for the last 20 years.
Museum of Communism will open in Bratislava on March 25
AFTER a trial run which has lasted since November 2012, the Museum of Communism in Bratislava will open on regular basis on March 25, 2013, the 25th anniversary of the Candle Demonstration in 1988 which presaged the Velvet Revolution of the following year.
Bus passengers in Košice and Bratislava get free internet on board
PASSENGERS on municipal public transport in Košice have been able, since mid February, to access the internet for free while riding on 20 modern buses. The buses can be recognised thanks to two internal monitors, and WiFi stickers on the doors. The buses will be used on various lines. “Lines will be swapped; and we will update passengers on our website,” Juraj Hrehorčák, general manager of the Košice City Transport Company, told the TASR newswire.
SDKÚ presidium will not censure Žitňanská and Beblavý
The presidium of the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) will not censure the initiators of the ‘We Create Slovakia’ project, MPs Lucia Žitňanská and Miroslav Beblavý. Chair of the party Pavol Frešo said after a six-hour discussion that Žitňanská, who currently leads the SDKÚ caucus, has his trust. Moreover, he stressed that the SDKÚ is a stable party which can resolve its problems in a friendly atmosphere, the SITA newswire reported on March 22.
Poprad commemorated first transport of Jewish females to Auschwitz
Representatives of the Jewish community, members of the local Poprad government as well as the general public, gathered at the Poprad railway station on March 24 to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust as well as the first transport of thousands of Jewish women and girls to the Auschwitz death camp, the TASR newswire reported.
Lipšic’s New Majority would make it into parliament, Focus poll shows
If parliamentary elections were held in mid March, the party of Daniel Lipšic, New Majority (NOVA), would receive 5.1 percent of the vote, thus making it over the 5-precent threshold and winning seats in parliament, according to an opinion poll carried out by Focus agency between March 6 and 12 based on a sample of 1,002 respondents. Compared to the previous poll held in February, NOVA’s results were 0.3 percentage points lower, the SITA newswire reported on March 25.

Public defender of rights Jana Dubovcová will have to rewrite the 2012 report on her office’s activities after parliament refused to approve it at its March 22 session, the TASR newswire reported.
Government representatives flew to US to discuss U.S. Steel Košice
Prime Minister Robert Fico, together with Finance Minister Peter Kažimír and Environment Minister Peter Žiga, left for the US to discuss the future of the Košice-based steelworks with top representatives of the U.S. Steel company at its headquarters in Pittsburg, the SITA newswire reported on March 24.
Fewer bankruptcies than expected
AN ANTICIPATED increase in the number of bankruptcies caused by the revision to the law on bankruptcy and restructuring did not occur in 2012. The Slovak Credit Bureau (SCB) came to this conclusion when analysing bankruptcy court rulings from 2012.
OECD cites Gorilla case
THE INFAMOUS Gorilla case has been mentioned in a June 2012 report prepared by an Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) working group focused on bribery in international business transactions, which the Slovak government acknowledged on March 20.
Financial literacy scrutinised
BANKS in Slovakia confirm that financial literacy among Slovaks is low. Based on the latest survey, which the IMAS company conducted for Slovenská Sporiteľňa (SLSP) last year, as many as 70 percent of respondents said that they consider financial education at schools to be insufficient and that they need to improve their knowledge in this field. About 43 percent of respondents aged 15-49 feel well informed about economic and financial topics, but in the category of people aged 50+, it is only 32 percent. Men tend to consider themselves better informed about financial matters than women.
Economy Ministry subventions passed
PARLIAMENT has passed an amendment to the law on grants provided by the Economy Ministry on March 19, which allows the ministry to provide financial aid for the support of research, development and innovation.
Sulík retains SaS leadership in vote
RICHARD Sulík will keep his top job in the opposition Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party after party members expressed their preference, in a secret ballot in mid March, for Sulík over his challenger Jozef Kollár, by a narrow margin of 13 votes. Kollár, who garnered votes from 121 of the 257 delegates at the party congress in eastern Slovakia’s Prešov on March 16, said that he would remain in the SaS at least for now, provided his two conditions are met by the victor: no castigation of people who publically supported him ahead of the vote and the inclusion of some of his programme points into the SaS agenda.

Banking Credit Bureau (SRBI), www.sbcb.skThe Banking Credit Bureau was launched on October 1, 2004. The operator of the register is the Slovak Banking Credit Bureau company owned by the three banks which co-founded the register. These are Slovenská Sporiteľňa, VÚB, and Tatra Banka. Currently, 16 banks are members of the register.
UPDATED: Far-right marches through Bratislava
FAR-RIGHT extremists marched through Bratislava’s centre, as they do every year in mid-March, to mark the anniversary of the establishment of the wartime Nazi-satellite Slovak state. A group of anti-extremist protesters, this year including Bratislava’s mayor, attempted to obstruct the extremists, but they managed to circumvent the blockade. A glossary of words as well as an exercise related to this article are also published online.
Romathan premieres new fairy tale
THE PROFESSIONAL Roma theatre Romathan premiered its 60th piece on Friday, March 22. The fairy tale for children Kto je na svete najkrajší / Who is the Most Beautiful in the World was performed for the first time at 11:00 in the big hall of the Historical City Hall on Hlavná, Košice. The theatre, which is based in Košice, plays across the country and is planning to tour Roma settlements with the current piece, which was written by Daniela Hivešová-Šilhanová and directed by Marián Balog.“This is an adaptation of an original fairy tale for a new generation of young audiences. They can get the lesson that everyone is the most beautiful and that we all together make the human world on our planet,” head of Romathan Karel Adam told the TASR newswire.
