The Justice Ministry will look into whether a judge of the Bratislava III District Court broke the law when she failed to tell the court about her acquaintance with a defendant of the Cypriot shell company Lancillon, which is suing state-run freight railway carrier Cargo for alleged profit loss. The ministry is now awaiting the motion of Transport Minister Ján Počiatek, the Sme daily reported on July 13.

Iconic Brazilian houses on display
BRAZIL IS known for its unique style – from samba to soccer, caipirinhas to Carnival. The 10 + 10 exhibition at Bratislava’s Design Factory points style-seekers toward the country’s architecture, presenting modern and contemporary Brazilian houses via the images of photographer Leonardo Finotti.“The idea was to make known in Slovakia the work of some relevant Brazilian architects from two important periods: the modern one [between 1930s and 1960s] and the contemporary one, which comprises the last two decades,” Brazilian Ambassador Susan Kleebank said while opening the exhibition first presented during May’s Days of Architecture and Design in Bratislava. The exhibition, which uses photography to showcase the buildings, is now showing at Design Factory through July 28.
New tools to tap tourism
WHILE TOURISM has boosted income and employment and reduced regional disparities in many countries, Slovakia has largely failed to effectively harness its history and nature to attract more visitors. Hopes are now pinned on the Strategy of Development of Tourism until 2020, a plan adopted by the Slovak cabinet on July 10, to help Slovakia become more competitive in foreign tourism and fully utilise all of its potential. The strategy includes a national rating system of quality and financial tools to support tourism companies that attract foreign tourists to Slovakia.

Still slim
THE BALTIC nations and Slovakia are among Europe’s smaller countries in both size and population. This, coupled with geographical proximity and a shared post-communist past, means all four countries are looking more for investors than investment opportunities. Such factors result in economic relationships which, when speaking about trade or investments, are far from robust.

Meal with Swiss spirit
CHRISTIAN Fotsch leaves nothing to chance when cooking fondue, the traditional Swiss dish first described in a booklet published in Zurich in 1699. Three types of grated Swiss cheese are prepared in bowls marked with stylish paper nametags, such as Appenzeller, Gruyére and Emmentaler, and are ready to be poured into a “caquelon”, a special pot for making fondue, along with dry white wine and Kirschwasser, the traditional Swiss cherry liquor.
Growing up with alcohol
UNTIL THE first half of the 20th century, the territory of today’s Slovakia was predominantly agricultural. With the exception of urban dwellers, most people earned their living through farming or raising cattle.
Walled off in the mind
ONE WOULD have thought that people who once lived behind the Iron Curtain would be sensitive to the different kinds of walls dividing countries, regions, towns or communities. Yet the walls that the non-Roma population erected over the past two decades to separate themselves from Roma communities tells a different story: Slovakia has not learned its lesson about walls and dividing lines.
Report criticises Roma policy
THE GOVERNMENT'S Roma policy is based on a discriminatory and sanctions-oriented policy while ignoring an action plan passed by the previous government, according to a group of NGOs operating in Slovakia.
