There are too many shortcomings in Slovak projects involving EU money, say MEPs
The frequency of errors in projects claiming money from European Union structural funds is higher than the European average, said members of the European Parliament at a meeting with Slovak MPs held on July 16.
Elections rules to be unified
The Slovak Interior Ministry has prepared a new law intended to unify the rules for the various types of elections held in Slovakia. The legislative proposal, whose aim is also to unify terminology, was submitted for interdepartmental review at the beginning of the week, the TASR newswire reported on July 16.
UPDATED: President appoints Čižnár as chief prosecutor
PRESIDENT Ivan Gašparovič formally appointed Jaromír Čižnár, a former law-school classmate of Prime Minister Robert Fico, as Slovakia’s general prosecutor on July 17, filling a position that had been vacant for almost two and a half years.
Three old gang-related murder cases reopened
The National Criminal Agency (NAKA) reopened three murders from the late 1990s and 2000, in an effort to shed more light on the criminal activities of the “Sýkorovci” organised crime gang, named after its leader, Miroslav Sýkora.
Slovakia's wealthiest political parties are Smer and SaS
The Slovak parliamentary parties with the most assets are the governing Smer and the opposition Freedom and Solidarity (SaS), the TASR newswire learned on Monday, July 15.
NBS: Scrapping of mortgage account fee slowed down inflation
The central bank (NBS) said on Monday, July 15 that overall inflation in June, which decelerated to 1.6 percent in annual terms, and stood at 0.1 percent month-on-month, was in line with its expectations. The lower growth in inflation in June was mainly due to an increase in the prices of non-processed foods and traded goods, with the exception of fuels, while the prices of market services dropped.
Foreign students complete first week of annual Slovak language course
The annual summer university Slovak language and culture programme at the centre for the study of Slovak as a foreign language (Studia Academica Slovaca) began July 8, 2013. The three-week course teaches Slovak language and culture to foreign learners. Almost 100 Slovak language enthusiasts from 16 countries worldwide are participating in the 23rd year of the event.
MVK poll: Fico leads, right-wing candidates have equal chances in presidential race
If the first round of the Slovak presidential election had been held in early July, incumbent Prime Minister Robert Fico would have emerged as the winner, with 43.6 percent of the vote, according to a poll released by the MVK poling agency on Monday, July 15. In the second round run-off, Fico would have faced off against independent (former Christian Democratic Movement [KDH]) MP Radoslav Procházka, a distant second, with 15.6 percent.
Bisnode: 30-40 percent of companies in Central Europe in foreign hands
Around 30-40 percent of the total equity of companies in the Central Europe region is in the hands of foreign owners, a survey carried out by consultancy firm Bisnode has revealed. Dutch, German and Austrian investors head the list when it comes to the volume of controlled equity in Central Europe.
Afghan who attacked Slovak soldiers has escaped
The Afghan soldier who was allegedly responsible for the deadly attack on Slovak soldiers at the Kandahar base in Afghanistan on June 9 has escaped from detention, the Slovak Defence Ministry confirmed for on Monday, July 15. The ministry was informed of the escape by NATO.
Stats Office: Consumer prices up 1.6 percent in June
Inflation reached 1.6 percent year-on-year in June, with core inflation at 1.7 percent and net inflation at 1 percent, the Slovak Statistics Office (ŠÚ) announced on Monday, July 15.
Aspiring bandits celebrate Jánošík, learn to throw valaškas
ON A weekend in mid June, Czech, Polish, Ukrainian and Slovak bandits gathered in the birthplace of legendary Slovak outlaw Juraj Jánošík in Terchová, at the 2nd International Meeting of Bandits. On June 15, they were trained in the arts of wielding a valaška (a traditional Slovak axe), hanging from a hook and making a skillful exit from the scene of a robbery.
Dražovce celebrated 900th anniversary of first written mention
DRAŽOVCE, a borough of the city of Nitra, was a separate village until 1975, and this year it is celebrating its 900th anniversary. The first mention of this municipality is recorded in the Zobor Charter, dating back to 1113.
2013 Peking to Paris Motor Rally crossed Slovakia
THE PEKING to Paris Rally, one of the biggest international motoring challenges, which features vintage and classic cars travelling from China to Paris, France, made its way this year through Slovakia, with stops in Košice and in Bratislava.
Customs officers seize over 82,000 pieces of ammunition
CUSTOMS officers from the town of Michalovce in eastern Slovakia seized more than 82,000 bullets, cartridges and projectiles. A Ukrainian citizen attempted to smuggle the ammunition, hidden in the fuel tank of the passenger car, from Slovakia to his homeland through the Vyšné Nemecké border crossing.
Soldier killed in Afghanistan received funeral with military honours
Several people, including President Ivan Gašparovič, Defence Minister Martin Glváč, Chief of the General Staff Peter Vojtek and US Ambassador to Slovakia Theodore Sedgwick, attended the funeral of Sergeant Major Daniel Kavuliak, who was killed in the attack at Kandahar on July 9. The ceremonial funeral with military honours took place in Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Turzovka, Žilina Region, on July 12.
Negotiations over detained Slovaks in Iran still ongoing
Slovakia’s attempts to negotiate the release of the group of Slovak paragliders who were detained in Iran and accused of espionage have so far been unsuccessful. The Iranian authorities arrested the men at the end of May, the Sme daily reported.
War criminal Milan Lukić could serve life sentence in Slovakia
A war criminal accused of killing at least 132 Muslim civilians in the Bosnian war could be transferred to a prison in Slovakia. The management of the Prison and Judicial Guards said that the International Court Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) asked whether it would be possible to place Milan Lukić in a Slovak prison. If yes, he would be the very first person condemned by the ICTY to serve his punishment in Slovakia, the TASR newswire reported on July 13.
Bezák might go abroad
Róbert Bezák, the former archbishop in Trnava who was dismissed from his post last year, wants to leave Slovakia. He said so during a discussion with the editor-in-chief of the Týždeň daily, Štefan Hríb, held at the Pohoda multimedia festival in Trenčín on July 13, the Sme daily reported.
Poll shows SaS, SDKÚ out of parliament
Two current opposition parties would not receive enough votes to pass the 5-percent threshold necessary for winning parliamentary seats if the general elections took place at the beginning of July. While the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) would receive only 4.7 percent of the vote, Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) would gain only 3.9 percent. On the other hand, non-parliamentary Party of Hungarian Community (SMK) would win the support of 5.1 percent of voters, according to the poll carried out by the MVK agency among 1,077 respondents.
