Outcry as ministry tinkers with public access to information
A RECENT attempt by the Economy Ministry to underhandedly revise the law on public access to information, the so-called info-law, hit a raw nerve among the NGOs promoting transparency and fairness in politics.
Malinová to be examined again
HEDVIGA Malinová will undergo another medical exam in the latest twist of a protracted criminal case over alleged ethnic violence. (Since the incident, Malinová has married and now goes by Žáková.)Malinová, a Hungarian-speaking Slovak citizen, reported that she was assaulted on her way to a university exam in Nitra in August 2006. Police concluded their investigation in September 2006, finding that no attack had occurred.

Single insurer still out of sight
THE HEALTH Ministry still has not presented the law to transform the country’s health insurance system into one with a single health insurer. There is no new deadline scheduled for the law, which was originally slated to take effect as of May 2013. At its November 6 session the cabinet acknowledged the ministry’s report, which however does not include any deadlines, the TASR newswire reported.

MORE recorded phone conversations involving journalist Tom Nicholson have been leaked. After the first recording, which contained Nicholson’s conversation with a colleague from the Sme daily, was delivered to Sme, several more recordings were made public on the internet.

Science parks link universities and private sector to jump start research
POOR cooperation between science institutions and the private sector is a long-term problem in Slovakia, but the Education Ministry has contributed nearly €280 million from EU funds and the state budget to create eight science parks at six universities this year in an attempt to change this.

NGOs back human rights strategy
THE FOREIGN Affairs Ministry postponed its national human rights strategy after critics organised a mass spamming of the ministry’s email addresses. Several religious organisations, MPs and supporters of traditional family have slammed it for furthering lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersexual (LGBTI) rights. The ministry, which now oversees the human rights agenda, has moved the deadline for submitting the human rights strategy to the government from September 30, 2013 to June 2014.

IN SLOVAKIA the traditional preference to buy, as opposed to lease, cars or manufacturing equipment means that the leasing industry lacks maturity in comparison with markets in western Europe. But leasing professionals say that as a result many companies carry excess costs and staff, making their businesses less competitive on the international market.

Contactless payments gain popularity
THOUGH many Slovaks are believed to use bank cards solely to withdraw cash, recent data show growing interest in contactless payments. More than 4.5 million contactless payments were made by bank clients in the second quarter of 2013 – 12 times more than in the same period last year – with €56 million paid through contactless transactions, the Slovak Banking Association (SBA) reported in August.
VAT collection better than expected
THE COLLECTION of value added tax in September and October exceeded the government’s expectations. It is €130 million, or one fifth, higher than what was projected, the Sme daily reported, adding that the government does not yet know whether the higher amount is due to increased spending by households in shops or a drop in occurrences of tax fraud.
