Fico attends conference on youth employment in Paris
Prime Minister Robert Fico is attending a one-day conference called Youth Employment, the second international event of this kind, in Paris.
Some private broadcasters will get exception as for the obligatory use of official language
As of next year, some of the private broadcasters will be exempt from the duty to use Slovak language in their programmes, the amendment to the Act on Broadcasting and Re-transmission implies. The amendment was signed into law by President Ivan Gašparovič.
Registrations of new cars beat expectations in October
The number of new passenger cars registered in Slovakia beat expectations in October when 6,599 cars in this category were registered. Month-on-month, this was an increase of 29.8 percent.
Consumer prices up 0.6 percent y-o-y in October
Consumer prices rose 0.6 percent on an annual basis in October but recorded no change when compared to September, the Slovak Statistics Office (ŠÚ) reported November 12.
Judicial senate changes were appropriate, says Borec
CHANGES made to the composition of the judicial senate in a case over a dispute between Supreme Court President Štefan Harabin and the General Prosecutor’s Office were made in compliance with the law, Justice Minister Tomáš Borec told journalists on November 12. He was referring to information published by the Sme daily in its November 8 issue on several unusual developments at the court during the adjudicating process, including the decision to take the case away from the panel of judges which had overturned a previous ruling awarding Harabin financial compensation.
State creates nearly 11,000 jobs for young unemployed
THE STATE has used nearly all of €70 million allocated for creating jobs for young unemployed, Prime Minister Robert Fico said during a press conference held on November 8. Thanks to the projects targeting people younger than 29 years launched last November, the state created a total of 11,000 new jobs.
Inflation drops to 0.6 percent in October
CONSUMER inflation in Slovakia continues to slow. Using national methodology, inflation was measured at 0.6 percent in October, which is 0.4 percentage points less than in the previous month, according to the data published by the Statistics Office on November 12.
Slovakia is third most industrialised EU nation
EVERY fourth euro produced in the Slovak economy comes from industry, which makes the country the third most industrialised member of the European Union, after Romania and the Czech Republic. Moreover, the share of industry in the country’s GDP in first half of this year stood at 25.8 percent, according to the study by Poštová Banka, based on Eurostat data.

Candidates for ECHR judges emerge
SEVEN candidates have applied for the post of European Court for Human Rights (ECHR) judge. The Judicial Council will select the three candidates that Slovakia is required to provide to the Council of Europe by December 2, the TASR newswire reported. The candidates for the one available position are as follows: Juraj Babjak, Andrea Krisková, Alena Poláčková, Miroslav Gavalec, Jana Zemková, Slovak Government Agent before the ECHR Marica Pirošíková and Associate Dean of the Comenius University Faculty of Law Ondrej Laciak. Three of the seven candidates submitted their applications on the last possible day, November 8, according to TASR.
Slovak industry shows signs of revival
THE INDUSTRIAL Production Index (IPP) was up 7.5 percent year-on-year in September 2013, the Statistics Office data show, as reported by the TASR newswire.
Krajcer endorses Frešo for run off
DANIEL Krajcer of the Nova party, who did not succeed in the election of the head of the Bratislava Self-Governing Region, has recommended that his supporters back SDKÚ head Pavol Frešo in the second round.
New fee for small companies announced
THE NEW fee small companies will have to pay as of the 2014 taxation period, the so-called tax license, will amount to at least to €480, Finance Minister Peter Kažimír announced on November 11.
Smer to consider abolishing eight regions
THE RULING Smer party is toying with the idea of abolishing the current administrative division of Slovakia. Instead of the current eight self-governing regions, Smer politicians are contemplating returning to the old model of four regions: western Slovakia, central Slovakia, eastern Slovakia and Bratislava, the Sme daily reported on November 11.
Extremist’s tactics pays off, expert says
FAR-RIGHT extremist Marian Kotleba has achieved his biggest political success in the November 9 regional elections. Not only did he advance into the second round of the regional governor election with over 21 percent of the votes, but he also received more than 8,600 votes as a candidate for the regional council. In absolute numbers, this makes him the councillor with the biggest voter support in the whole country.
Smer dominates four regions
HALF of the eight regional councils in Slovakia will be dominated by councillors of the ruling Smer party who were elected into the seats as Smer candidates or in coalitions with the Christian Democrats (KDH).
Kotleba feeling strong before second round
BANSKÁ Bystrica Region returned the most surprising election result after the leader of the far-right People's Party-Our Slovakia (ĽSNS), Marian Kotleba, advanced to the second round of the regional governor election with over 21 percent of the vote. In the run-off he will face incumbent regional president Vladimír Maňka of Smer, who received 49.5 percent of the vote, falling short of the 50 percent required for victory by just half a percent.

THE POLICE have launched an investigation into two incidents of alleged vote-buying during the November 9 regional elections in eastern Slovakia, Police Corps vice-president Ľubomír Ábel announced at a press conference on November 10.
