Quote of the week
“It is similar to saying that the unemployed should pay income tax.”
Fico makes promises
INSTEAD of the widely anticipated announcement on whether he would run for presidency or remain Slovakia’s prime minister, Robert Fico offered the delegates of the ruling party Smer’s congress two priorities that his government is supposed to pursue: pushing unemployment to the average of the eurozone by 2016 and boosting wages. In order to meet this ambition, the jobless rate, currently standing at 13.66 percent in October 2013, would have to be trimmed down to 12.1 percent to match the eurozone’s average unemployment.
'Bad mood' among SMEs
CORRUPTION, administrative burdens, the corporate tax rate and paying tax advances weigh the heaviest on small and medium-sized (SMEs) Slovak businesses. Yet, entrepreneurs view the process of registering a business in Slovakia as efficient and say the related costs are reasonable. These are some of the results of SME-Friendly Slovakia, a survey conducted by the American Chamber of Commerce in Slovakia (AmCham) on 137 companies.
Ukraine: a challenge for Slovakia
AMONG Slovakia’s neighbours, Ukraine is the only one that is not a member of the European Union, and recent events which saw hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians pour out into the streets and squares of Kiev and other cities suggest this is unlikely to change in the near future. As such, observers say Ukraine should definitely be Slovakia’s number one foreign policy priority.
SPP shareholder changes ownership
THE OWNERSHIP of the Czech company EPH, which controls the transit of gas through Slovakia and its distribution into households, will change. While J&T finance group and Daniel Křetínský will stay on as owners, billionaire Petr Kellner, the richest man in the Czech Republic, plans to sell his shares, the Sme daily reported.
Top philanthropists announced
SLOVAKIA marked the Day of Philanthropy, November 27, by granting top philanthropic awards. The Slovak Donors Forum organises the Top Corporate Philanthropist ranking annually, which is the only ranking in Slovakia that assesses corporate donors based on the volume of funds they allocate to public and philanthropic endeavours. This year the Hospodárske Noviny daily and the Ecopress publishing company became partners of the forum.

After seasonal adjustments, industrial production rose by 0.4 percent compared to September.
Conference targets women in business
JUST 29 percent of entrepreneurs in Slovakia are women, a mere 100,000 in absolute numbers. There is only one woman in the current government and 28 women among 150 deputies in parliament. Hence the need for the launch of a so-called white paper on these issues at the second annual Women’s Entrepreneurship Forum (WEF) held on December 3 in Bratislava.
Tešedíkovo name case continues
CITIZENS of the village of Tešedíkovo should exercise their constitutional right and turn to the Constitutional Court over the government’s refusal to consent to their request to have the village renamed to Pered, Most-Híd MPs Arpád Érsek and Gábor Gál wrote in an open letter they sent to the village, the TASR newswire reported on December 10.

Sabinov: early café culture
FOR MORE affluent Slovaks in the 1920s, a typical Sunday afternoon in a small town would involve dressing up, getting in the car for a drive and parking in front of the local café to spend time in the company of other social elites. Few people could have afforded to parade themselves around town in this way for a simple reason: only the wealthiest had enough money to buy a car.
Four Slovaks receive QEP and Master QEP top titles
FOUR Slovaks, Ivan Čaniga, Ján Štovka, Gabriel Lipták and Ján Hladík, received the top European titles in photography: the QEP (Qualified European Photographer) a Master QEP. For the first time ever, the evaluation itself did not take place in Western Europe, but at the MassMedia Centre of the Pan-European University in Bratislava.
