Irish recipes: Irish cream liqueur cheesecake
Ingredients: 300g packet chocolate digestive biscuits (crushed), 125g butter, 50g Toblerone chocolate or plain milk chocolate, 200ml fresh cream, 450g Philadelphia cream cheese, 125g icing sugar, 1 measure of cream liqueur (e.g. Bailey’s Irish Cream).

Avalanche victims commemorated
IN EARLY February, the victims of the worst Slovak avalanche in recorded history were commemorated in Staré Hory near Banská Bystrica. On the evening of February 6, the avalanche slid from the south-eastern slopes of Krížna Mountain in the Veľká Fatra range, killing 18 people, 15 children of whom were children.

722 lose Slovak citizenship
IN THE three and a half years since the State Citizenship Act went into effect (June 17, 2010-February 4, 2014), it has stripped a total of 722 people of their Slovak citizenship, according to Interior Ministry statistics, as reported by the TASR newswire.
Slovakia keeps Tokaj brand
SLOVAKIA’S producers of Tokaj wine can continue to use the brand name after the European Court of Justice (ECJ) declared that the listing of the Slovak wine name “Vinohradnícka oblasť Tokaj” in the E-Bacchus register of protected designations of origins “does not constitute an actionable measure”.
Who is Radoslav Procházka
RADOSLAV Procházka was born on March 31, 1972 in Bratislava. Aged 41, Procházka is one of the youngest of the candidates, which he also stressed in the initial stage of his billboard campaign. Procházka was among the first to announce his candidacy, a full year before the term of the current president ends.
Light at the end of the tunnel for construction
MUCH needed growth in Slovakia’s construction sector continued in the final month of 2013, partly due to a mild winter that allowed construction work to continue into the season. Some experts remain cautious, calling the growth fragile, while others see it as a sign that the sector has bottomed out and is gradually starting to revive.
State's telecom stake for sale
THE STATE already has a plan to sell its 49-percent stake in a major telecoms operator, Slovak Telekom (ST), after the government discreetly signed a memorandum with the majority owner of the company, Deutsche Telekom. Though concrete dates, the method of sale or the price tag are unknown, the country’s finance minister has already hinted that some of the money the state is to cash in for its minority stake is earmarked to finance a return to a single payer health-care system, something Prime Minister Robert Fico has claimed is a priority.
Visegrad Markets launched in Bratislava's Old Market Hall
BRATISLAVA’S Old Market Hall (Stará Tržnica) has been re-opened, and while the only regular events scheduled so far are markets offering local products, along with irregular concerts and other cultural events, the civic association that runs the market, Aliancia Stará Tržnica, has revealed plans for upcoming weekend community events.
Olympics stamps on exhibition
IN CONNECTION with the 22nd Winter Olympics in Sochi, an exhibition called Winter Sports and Winter Olympics on Slovak Postal Stamps is taking place in the Postal Museum at Partizánska cesta 9 in Banská Bystrica until March 31. It presents a 20-year overview of winter sport-themed Slovak philatelic works.

THE SPIŠ region in north-eastern Slovakia contained, along with Bratislava and the Hauerland region in central Slovakia, one of the biggest German settlements on the territory. Germans inhabited mainly towns, as opposed to rural areas, and Spišská Nová Ves was no exception.

Dušan Jurkovič Award presented
THE SLOVAK Architects Society presented its annual awards for 2013 in November, with the most prestigious award, named after prominent Slovak architect Dušan Jurkovič, going to architects from the A. LT Architekti studio for the family home in Orava. The architects sought to integrate the house into its surroundings by basing its design on traditional regional architecture. A total of 22 works competed in the contest in 2013.

Váhostav lagging in payments
ONE OF Slovakia’s biggest construction companies, Váhostav – SK, which is working on a stretch of the D1 cross-country highway, has been slow to pay its subcontractors, arguing that they are operating at a loss on the project, the SITA newswire wrote.
