Terichem wins the world with the thinnest film
THE SLOVAK-Finnish company Terichem, based in the northern Slovak town of Svit, has managed to produce the thinnest film in the world. The company invested €25 million in a new production line, which was put into operation earlier this year, and created 45 new jobs. Now the company is able to produce capacitor film only 2 microns thick, the Hospodárske Noviny economic daily wrote.
Gašparovič's adieu

When asked to name some positive contributions, political scientist and president of the Institute for Public Affairs (IVO) Grigorij Mesežnikov said he does not see much. However, in situations where it was necessary to confirm Slovakia’s trans-Atlantic solidarity, Gašparovič mostly did his job, he said.
Diary of WWI vet surfaces after 100 years
IT IS rare to get to read the firsthand notes of a soldier who fought in World War I, and all the more so if they include his personal impressions. The diary of Jozef Klempa, a Slovak who was drafted at the age of 20 and fought on the Russian front, was discovered and reproduced by his granddaughter, and was recently published as a book called Moje Skúsenosti za Svetovej Vojny (My Experiences During the World War).

Two Roma get €600 in damages for discrimination
THE OWNER of a bar in the municipality of Spišské Vlachy (in the Spišská Nová Ves district) discriminated against a Roma couple when he refused to serve them in his bar and asked them to leave, according to a court ruling. The Spišská Nová Ves District Court decided the couple should be compensated for the discrimination with €300 each.
Fico: Slovakia can last comfortably on own gas reserves until October
IF REVERSE flow capacity was non-existent and no incoming gas flow came from Ukraine, Slovakia would still be able to last until October solely on reserves stored in own reservoirs, Prime Minister Robert Fico said during Question Time in Parliament on June 12.
Gašparovič appoints 11 judges, others doubtful
OUTGOING President Ivan Gašparovič appointed 11 judges on June 12, three days before his second term in office ends and he is replaced by the president-elect Andrej Kiska.
Statistics Office: Core inflation was 0.2 percent in May, net 0.3 percent
Year-on-year inflation did not change in May 2014 but core inflation amounted to 0.2 percent in May, while net inflation was 0.3 percent, the Slovak Statistics Office (ŠÚ) informed on June 12.
Bratislava hospital project moves to implementation phase
The construction of a new hospital in Bratislava is to progress, as on June 11, the government approved the proposal of a feasibility study of the investment tabled by the Health Ministry.
Gašparovič criticises corruption, judiciary and media in final address
Outgoing President Ivan Gašparovič, who last spoke in parliament in 2009, held his final address June 11, speaking on high unemployment rate, poor state of judiciary, corruption, but also media.
V4 Summit: Fico will lead the Slovak delegation to Budapest
Prime Minister Robert Fico will lead the Slovak delegation to the June meeting of the prime ministers of the Visegrad Group (V4) in Budapest. From July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014, Hungary presided over the V4. According to rules of Visegrad cooperation, at the end of its presidency, the presiding country hosts a meeting of heads of cabinets on its territory. The planned summit will take place at the invitation of Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orbán on June 24, 2014. European Commission President José Manuel Barroso plans take part in the gathering of V4 prime ministers.
Statistics Office: Ageing of population slightly intensified in 2013
The general trend of an ageing population has accelerated more than expected according to the current demographic prognosis, representatives of the Slovak Statistics Office (ŠÚ) announced on June 11. Head of the ŠÚ, Ľudmila Benkovičová, told the TASR newswire that on the last day of 2013, Slovakia had 5,415,949 inhabitants, 2,776,889 of whom were women. She noted that last year was characterised by a high level of stability in almost all demographic processes with minimal annual variation in indicators of fertility, mortality, marriage, divorce and abortion.
Parliament rejects proposal to protect corruption whistleblowers
Parliament failed to pass another draft bill proposing the protection for those who report corruption. On June 10, MPs of the ruling Smer party refused the proposal tabled by Christian-Democratic Movement (KDH), while the next day, they turned down the one brought up by the Ordinary People and Independent Personalities (OĽaNO).
Economy Minister has no official information on sale of Slovenské Elektrárne
Economy Minister Tomáš Malatinský has not yet been officially informed about any intention of the Italian group Enel to sell its 66-percent stake in Slovenské Elektrárne (SE), Slovakia’s dominant power producer.
