Exploring new ways to expand ties
EVEN though Denmark is closing its diplomatic mission in Slovakia due to budgetary constraints, Danish Ambassador Christian Konigsfeldt believes that Slovakia and Denmark, “both relatively small countries in size and population, but definitely great nations”, will succeed in finding new ways to expand their ties. The Slovak Spectator spoke to Konigsfeldt about Copenhagen’s green success and Denmark’s high ranking in the area of employment culture, as well as Danish farmers in Slovakia and his impressions of the country which he will soon be leaving.

THE STATE’S revenues from tax and payroll tax collection should be €290 million higher this year than estimated by the Finance Ministry in its February analysis. The main reason is better collection of the value-added tax (VAT), but also higher revenues from corporate taxes.

Youths take on folk music
BRATISLAVA is offering an especially wide array of cultural events this summer, consisting of classical music, jazz, dance, foreign cultures, gastronomy and more. Folklore will also be featured, with the Slovak Folk Festival in early July, where the spotlight will shine on children and youth ensembles.
Bratislava gets a pair of urban beehives
BRATISLAVA’S first two public beehives were set up on June 19, with the roof of the Stará Tržnica (Old Market Hall) and the Waterworks Community Garden chosen to accommodate the structures. The project was organised by the Centre for Environmental and Ethical Education, “Živica” (meaning Resin).
Theatrics trumping politics
IGOR Matovič, suffering from an acute case of political exhibitionism, has accused a rising right-leaning political star with an inflated ego of murky financing of his presidential campaign, which brought Radoslav Procházka enough popularity to beat his former mother party in recent polls. The political melodrama, which already involves lie detector testing, secret recordings and claims of political assassination, would be entertaining if it didn’t actually reflect the misery of centre-to-right-wing parties in Slovakia.

Flood of controversy over new water law
NEW RULES regulating the sale of Slovak water abroad, which are part of a bigger amendment under discussion in parliament, have provoked a wave of reactions, with activists alleging the Environment Ministry is clearing the way to commodify and export a natural resource. The ministry calls the claims “nonsense”.
New captial not to be taken for granted
THOUGH Denmark and Slovakia are similar in size and population, Denmark is a highly innovative country with a sophisticated system of promotion and branding, which Slovakia can learn from. Slovakia benefits from Danish investments, which bring expertise and new jobs, and are diversified and spread out among the regions. But with other countries eyeing Danish investments, there is room for Slovakia to improve as an investment destination.
OSCE slams courts over Bonanno
THE ORGANISATION for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) has sharply criticised the first verdict of the Bratislava District Court in the Bonanno case, in which the Nový Čas tabloid daily was ordered to apologise to Supreme Court Judge Daniel Hudák for harming his personal integrity.The daily will have to publish the apology on the first page with a headline the same size as the headlines of the original articles, the SITA newswire reported.

SERBIAN drug lord Dragoslav Kosmajac will no longer be able to use his Slovak passport when travelling.
More men arriving, more women leaving
MORE than 5,100 people immigrated to Slovakia in 2013, while almost 2,800 left the country, the Slovak Statistics Office (ŠÚ) announced in early June. Men represented a majority among immigrants (57.8 percent), while women prevailed among emigrants (61.2 percent).
Tax Cobra reveals fraud with sugar
TAX Cobra, the special financial law enforcement unit, has revealed carousel frauds involving sugar, totalling some €19.5 million and perpetrated by two criminal groups.
Pair in controversial video accused of rioting
THE POLICE charged a young woman and her partner, who appeared in a video recently published by the Topky.sk website showing them having a sex on the street, of rioting. The media outlets reported earlier in the week that the video seemed to be a rape, and widely criticised the website for its publishing.
Bezák and Pope Francis meet
FORMER Trnava archbishop Róbert Bezák met with Pope Francis on June 25 after the general audience in the Vatican which involved about 30 bishops. He, however, failed to receive a personal meeting for which he asked.
Maďarič may not seek re-election in Smer’s structures
CULTURE Minister Marek Maďarič will not run for the post of Smer’s deputy chair at the congress held on June 28, the TASR newswire reported, referring to several sources from party’s leadership.

SLOVAKIA is interested in participating in the new NATO training mission in Afghanistan after 2014.
