Auto sector contractors lead the way with R&D
SLOVAKIA’S automotive industry, a pillar of its economy, cannot grow and stay competitive without research and development (R&D). But with the parent companies of carmakers in Slovakia keeping R&D in their home countries, it is up to the auto sector’s contractors to build R&D centres here. With the role of these contractors expanding, some have responded to this call and launched R&D centres in Slovakia. Slovakia’s auto industry welcomes this development and is calling for the launch of a national technological institute for which R&D would be its core business.

Getting more electric cars on Slovakia's roads
ELECTRIC cars are quiet, fast, inexpensive to operate and environmentally friendly, yet only 70 of them are registered in Slovakia. Observers say this is mainly due to poor infrastructure, the cars’ high price tag and a lack of promotion. However, the new “interconnection” between western and eastern Slovakia completed in May, with 15 publicly accessible, fast charging stations, could help boost interest in electric cars.

Gov't to spend millions on EU presidency
TWELVE years into its European Union membership, Slovakia will for the first time preside over the EU Council in 2016. The presidency should cost taxpayers between €50-80 million, according to earlier estimates voiced by Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajčák. Gas flows further reduced
SLOVAKIA, as well as other European countries, is reporting a reduction in supplies of Russian natural gas from Ukraine. The current reductions do not pose a threat to gas consumers in Slovakia, and the country says it is prepared for a possible gas crisis. While Russian Gazprom claims that technical issues are behind the lower gas supplies, politicians and analysts also see a political message behind the reduction. In spite of decreased gas supplies, Slovakia has resolved to continue its reverse gas flow to Ukraine.
