Bratislava's airport will be ready to meet Schengen Zone requirements when the main EU inspection takes place, Prime Minister Robert Fico said.

During a visit to M. R. Štefánik Airport on August 20, Fico said that when his government took power in July 2006, Slovakia was lagging behind in its preparations for joining the Schengen Zone, but his government has already adopted more measures in this area than the previous government did in four years.

Fico also expressed his appreciation to the airport's management for all its hard work, according to the TASR newswire.

Slovakia plans to join the Schengen Zone on January 1, 2008, although airports won't become part of the system until four months later.
