Monks of this order came to Bratislava in 1672, and outside the city walls, close to the Laurinská gate, they built a church with a monastery on donated plots of land along with a hospital meant to aid the poor city inhabitants. The hospital played a significant role during the plague epidemic in 1710-1713. With its architectural and historical value, it belongs among the most precious Baroque sacral buildings in Bratislava.
In the interior of this complex, the Bratislava Flagship restaurant has been welcoming visitors for years. At the place where the once-famous Atlon cinema was located, visitors are captivated by a monumental space of wood and stone, with a stage and an open area spanning three floors. The capacity of 500 people in this open space does not make it any less-cosy, and offers a chance to taste not only typical Prešporok meals, but also the atmosphere of Bratislava which is symbolically present in the restaurant’s interior.
The very name of the city in the restaurant’s name reveals that the goal is to present classic and traditional meals from this area. Ingredients and recipes of foods and drinks are typical for the Bratislava region. Apart from typical halušky (gnocchi-type pasta), visitors can observe through glass employees making classical homemade pies, or filled dumplings from potato dough, homemade potato-dough pancakes, homemade fried gnocchi and other specialities. Another favourite is garlic soup in a homemade loaf of bread baked in a wood-heated oven on a farm.
On the drink menu, you will find only Slovak beers and wines from the local small Carpathian region around Bratislava.
The won café, named after F.X. Messerschmidt, on the ground floor pays tribute not just to the most famous Baroque sculptor and author of the world-renowned collection of works - Character Heads - which he created in Bratislava; but it also produces homemade ice cream according to an old recipe.
A novelty is the long-awaited Monastery Brewery located in the depths of the original monastery of the Merciful Brothers. In old cellars, brewing technology of the “old school” beer brewery is located. The beer fermentation will take place in traditional open spaces for this purpose, called “spilka” as it did in the past. Finally, the beer will sit in stock tanks to create lager beer.
Visitors of the Bratislava Flagship restaurant will be able to choose – the delight of delicious homemade non-pasteurised lager right where it was brewed, within the premises of the original monastery; or overlooking the pompous premises of the Flagship.
