New flats will soon be available for rent in Bratislava's historic city centre. However, they are not going to be a part of a new developer project; rather, the city will renovate the iconic building next to the St Martin's Cathedral that houses the renowned Salvator pharmacy.
The goal is to reconstruct the 10 flats on the six floors above the pharmacy, with one on the fifth and sixth floors being turned into two, according to Index.
The building dates back to 1904, when pharmacist Rudolf Adler had it built. For the next 90 years, a pharmacy was operated on the ground floor until 1995 when it closed and its Jesuit pharmacy furnishing from 1727 sold. In the next two decades the building was left intact.
Everything changed in 2020, when the city decided to buy the 50 percent ownership from a private owner €373,000 and later the furnishing for almost €1 million. The historical pharmacy was restored and opened in late 2023. However, the remaining above-ground floors were left intact. The city had already indicated at the time that it planned to reconstruct them.
Now the idea is beginning to take shape. Based on the submitted plan for the purpose of issuing a binding opinion, the goal is a comprehensive reconstruction.
The duplex flat located on the fifth and sixth floors will be divided into two separate flats, increasing the total number to eleven. The large flats facing the street will retain their original spatial division. On the other hand, the smaller flats in the courtyard will be redesigned.
Although the façade of the building will not change, a new passenger elevator should be added in the courtyard. No parking spaces are planned.
The municipality has already issued a positive binding opinion. In the future, it will not be possible to add a superstructure or extension.
The project will now be assessed by local building authorities. Once done, the reconstruction can be carried out.
