Brexit should not have a negative impact on the business relations between Slovakia and the United Kingdom. In the past two years, the trade between the countries has grown by 30 percent.

“The trade exchange between the UK and Slovakia is increasing and we expect the trend to continue in the future,” said spokesperson for the British Chamber of Commerce in Slovakia (Britcham) Peter Ščasný, as quoted by the TASR newswire.

The UK represents one of the five biggest export destinations for Slovakia, with the key sector being automotive.

“The investments in this field have been increasing and the trade has not dropped, but is rather more intensive,” Ščasný added, as quoted by TASR.

Other sectors supported by Britcham are increasing, too, while they also register applications from British firms that want to import their goods to Slovakia.

“The UK wants to agree on a bold and ambitious free trade agreement with the EU which will result in the British companies having maximal freedom in trade within the European markets,” Ščasný said, as quoted by TASR, adding that the Slovak firms will have the same privileges in the UK. “Barrier-free and tariff-free free trade access is beneficial for all economies in Europe.”

The British companies and businesspeople are trying to respond to the political situation in Slovakia.

“They have to be more active in using export and import opportunities and they cannot rely on the membership in the EU, hoping it will do their job,” Ščasný said, as quoted by TASR.
