The final cost of decommissioning Slovakia's nuclear power plants at Jaslovské Bohunice and Mochovce will be some 55 billion Sk ($1.55 billion) in 1996 prices, according to Jozef Jamrich, the director of Jaslovské Bohunice's Division for the Disposal of Nuclear Machinery. All existing nuclear facilities are scheduled to be completely liquidated by the year 2130. Jamrich explained that technical procedures exist for the decommissioning of nuclear power plants, which measure the impact on the environment.
Since January 1995, the V1 and V2 reactors at Jaslovské Bohunice have been putting aside 10% of the proceeds from energy sales against the cost of their future retirement. The money is accumulating in the State Fund for Liquidation of Nuclear Power Plants, which is administered by the Slovak Ministry of Economy. "At present there is 1.135 billion Sk ($31.1 million) in the fund," said Alena Melichárková, press spokesperson for the Slovak Electricity Works (SE). Out of this fund, permanent storage places for burned-out radio-active fuel rods should also be financed within the next 30 to 50 years.
