The constructors of the longest tunnel in Slovakia, Višňové, have completed the digging of the first tube.
“The drilling of the second tube will be finished in early September,” said Michaela Michalová, spokesperson for the National Highway Company (NDS), as quoted by the TASR newswire, adding that the exact date will depend on the geological conditions.
The 7.5 kilometre Višňové tunnel is part of the cross-country D1 stretch between Lietavská Lúčka and Dubná Skala. The construction of the section, with a total length of 14 kilometres, started in summer 2014. It costs nearly €500 million including VAT.
Part of the stretch is the Višňové tunnel, several bridges more than 2.5 kilometres long, the Lietavská Lúčka junction, a pull-in, and a centre for highway administration and maintenance, TASR wrote.
It is expected that the completion of the section, built by the Italian company Salini Impregilo and the Slovak firm Dúha, scheduled for December 2019, will be delayed. The road will be placed into operation by the end of 2020, TASR reported.
