Foreign debt grows 15% in 1H97

Slovakia's gross foreign debt was $9.038 billion at the end of June, the National Bank of Slovakia (NBS) reported. Of that total, $1.620 billion was the debt of the government and the NBS, while the debt of commercial banks and the corporate sector stood at $7.229 billion.

During the first six months of this year, Slovakia's total foreign debt grew 15.3 percent (by $1.2 billion), following mainly the $811 million increase in short-term debt of commercial banks. In contrast, banks' mid-and long-term debts dropped by $82 million. However, mid-and long-term debt of corporations increased by $432 million in that period. Gross foreign debt per capita was $1,705.
