The Allianz Slovenská Poisťovňa (SP) insurance company registers dozens of applications for insuring drones.
The insurance sum for a drone can – according to its weight – amount to almost €2 million.
Drones, or pilotless planes, have become an everyday reality in recent years, and have found use in the military, monitoring of natural disasters, guarding borders and delivery of consignments. Instead of having a pilot, they are controlled remotely by a navigator or by a pre-selected flight programme. However, in case of an accident, the damage caused can be high.
So far, drones do not need flight licences and navigators can operate them without any licence, according to European regulations.
However, in Slovakia, all drones must be under the supervision of the Transport Office, which maintains a detailed record of all pilotless devices above a certain limit.
The insurance of drones is close to that of obligatory insurance of manned planes. Although it is not obligatory so far, it can – in case of an accident – cover damage caused by a drone to another person and his/her property, but not the damage to the drone itself, Allianz-SP informed the TASR newswire.
