KOŠICE-BASED construction company Inžinierske Stavby is to lay off 343 employees in the upcoming weeks and months for organisational reasons, the SITA newswire reported on September 21.
The Labour Office in Košice confirmed that it had been notified about the collective layoff. The chairman of the company’s trade union, Štefan Salaj, described the planned staff reduction as a catastrophe, and the result of the decision by the new centre-right government to halt highway construction by means of PPP projects, SITA reported. The construction firm employed 1,452 people as of late July, 2010. Salaj added that 90 percent of the staff worked on highway construction projects.
