THE THIRD channel offered by public-service Slovak television, known as Trojka, ceased broadcasting on June 30 last year. The decision to halt the all-sports channel, which was launched just prior to the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, was solely financial, according to Ľuboš Machaj, programme director of the merged public-service broadcaster Radio and Television of Slovakia (RTVS), which was created in January 2011, the SITA newswire reported.
The first budget adopted by RTVS last April brought cost-cutting and layoffs and RTVS sought to save about €1 million by switching off Trojka. Machaj said that if the financial situation of the broadcaster improves, it is ready to relaunch Trojka.
