Mobile operators collect information about customers. What sort of things do they know?

Operators can pass on clients' data only if they have agreed to geolocation and data processing for marketing purposes.

Where you sleep, where you go, how old you are; this is information mobile operators can provide to research agencies for population behaviour analysis. They argue it is anonymised and no particular person can be tracked down.

The Market Locator SK agency used the data from three major mobile operators at the end of the past year to map mobility in the Bratislava and Trnava Regions.

“We used aggregated data on the movement of SIM cards without connecting this to the phone numbers and other personal data of the SIM card owners,” Peter Fusek of Market Locator SK said.

Aggregation means processing data into groups. The data in this case was aggregated into age categories and SIM card type: private versus corporate, he added.
