ECONOMY Minister Pavol Rusko is optimistic that at least two Slovak firms will participate in the reconstruction of Iraq.

The Slovak daily Hospodárske noviny wrote on December 17 that Slovakia was among the 62 states that the US put on a list of those with whom it wants to negotiate possible participation in Iraq's reconstruction.

The US has earmarked a total of $18.9 billion (€15.36 billion) for the work. The head of Slovakia's investment development agency SARIO, Ján Bajánek, estimated that Slovak firms could get contracts comprising between two to five percent of this sum.

Companies such as Inžinierske stavby, BP Trading, Doprastav, Chirana, Východoslovenské strojárne, Martimex Alfa, and SES Tlmače were among those who showed interest in the reconstruction work.
