Slovenská Pošta (Slovak Post) plans to close several branches across Slovakia as part of a network optimisation strategy. This move reflects long-term changes in customer behaviour, namely a decline in traditional letter correspondence and a growing demand for digital and courier services.

Of the 26 branches to be closed in the first phase of the “branch network optimisation”, nine are located in Bratislava. Four branches are set to close in the autumn, with further closures expected in due course, Slovenská Pošta spokesperson Eva Peterová told the TASR news agency.

The closure of selected post offices was preceded by a thorough analysis that considered various factors, such as each branch’s performance, the efficiency of services provided, and economic sustainability, Peterová said. She added that the changes would also include strengthening the operations of successor branches and adjusting opening hours.

The closures will take place gradually. From August 1, the Vlčie hrdlo branch will close, followed on September 1 by the branches on Sibírska Street in Nové Mesto and Čiernovodská Street in Vrakuňa. On October 1, branches on Blumentálska Street in Old Town and Seberíniho Street in Ružinov will close.

In the case of the two post offices - at Seberíniho and Dúbravská Cesta - Slovak Post accommodated the needs of local residents by designating an alternative post office for the collection of notified items, i.e. for collection of items notified by yellow notice, in addition to the official successor post office.

The highest number of closures will affect Ružinov, which had the densest network of post offices in the entire country.

The Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications and Postal Services, which oversees compliance with legal requirements for providing the universal postal service, has also approved the closure of three additional branches: Bratislava 22 (Kašmírska 7, Ružinov), Bratislava 25 (Záhradnícka 95, Ružinov), and Bratislava 45 (Dúbravská cesta 4, Karlova Ves). The exact dates for these closures have not yet been announced, but the public will be informed in advance.

At the same time, Slovenská Pošta is preparing to close the Bratislava 3 branch, located at Tomášikova 3497/54 in the Nové Mesto borough. The expected closure date for this branch is in the second quarter of 2026.

The planned closure of four post offices in Ružinov has caused concern for Ružinov mayor Martin Chren, who has already met with the management of Slovak Post. He disagrees with the justification that Ružinov has the densest network of post offices in Slovakia.

“Technically, that may be true on paper, but some branches located in shopping centres (Eurovea and Zlaté Piesky) clearly do not primarily serve local residents,” Chren wrote on social media.

Meanwhile, a petition to keep the Sibírska branch open in Nové Mesto, initiated by mayor Matúš Čupka, has been signed by more than 600 residents, the Sme daily wrote.
