British retailer Tesco Plc said on June 2 that its 1997 turnover in Slovakia totaled 4.2 billion Sk ($121.6 million), making it the country's leader in the supermarket retailing sector. Comparative figures for the previous year are unavailable because Tesco took over its stores from U.S. retailer Kmart during 1996. However Tesco's public relations agency for Slovakia, Shilland & Co. Central Europe, said that sales increased by "about 10 to 15% year-on-year in 1997." Tesco has seven stores in Slovakia and Shilland & Co. said the company planned to build two or three hypermarkets in the country in the next two years.
