INTERNET and cable TV provider UPC Broadband Slovakia will start providing public telephone services in the autumn of this year, UPC spokesman Jaroslav Kolár confirmed for SITA.

"UPC is pursuing the goal of becoming a Triple Play operator, that is, a provider of three services via one broadband connection: Internet, television, and telephone," said Kolár.

Thus, the company will compete with Slovak Telekom (ST) on the Triple Play concept. The dominant fixed-line operator, the ST is now extending its offer as well. In addition to voice services on fixed lines and Internet services it will also provide voice services over the Internet (VoIP), digital television, and video on demand.

UPC and Slovak Telekom already signed an interconnection agreement in March to enable their clients to make calls to the other's network. "We will provide a full fledged voice service, which will be partly accessible over cables and partly over fixed lines," said Kolár.
