Trade unions call on people to vote for Smer

A LABOUR Day event organized by the Trade Union Confederation (KOZ) in Banská Bystrica on May 1 heard a call for a high turnout in the upcoming general elections and advice to people to vote for the main opposition party, Smer.

The call to vote for Smer, which was approved by the KOZ at a meeting in Košice on March 30, was made at the event by KOZ Vice-Chairman Eugen Škultéty, while KOZ Chairman Ivan Saktor gave a passionate speech to the crowd, saying that two-thirds of Slovak citizens have been suffering from the current government's policies.

"The only way to change this is through the general elections," he said, as reported by the TASR news agency.

Smer Chairman Robert Fico also made a short speech, saying he believed that a social-democratic government would take power after June 17.

At the same time, Fico also expressed personal support for Saktor in his bid to become the mayor of Banská Bystrica.
