Reader feedback: Meekness only reinforces attitudes

Re: Photos fan new Slovak-Hungarian tensions, TSS Online, August 23, 2006

If the attitude of the Magyar is that Slovaks are considered slaves and by association an inferior race, I would suggest that the presence of the SNS in government has nothing to do with their attitude. It looks more as if the idea of any form of Slovak national consciousness is perceived by Hungary as a threat and unacceptable.

That attitude will remain whether your nation is weak and supplicant or stands proud and vocal. In fact, the former probably just reinforces it.

Píšem or pišám?

"Do ľava," (to the left) I yelled, "Nie, do prava" (no, to the right), I gasped. "Dolšie," I screamed. "Nie, nie, horšie..." My Slovak girlfriend collapsed in laughter. Was it something I said?
