THE MIDDLE of winter is near and the weather corresponds with January in the calendar. After the arrival of cold air, the temperature at the Chopok peak decreased to -13 C along with a snow whirl. But this did not improve ski conditions significantly.

For the upcoming week, meteorologists forecast winter weather with snow squalls and sunny weather during the weekend. In mountains at 1,000 metres above sea level, the temperature will decrease to -10 C and during the day the temperature will be -5/-1 C, making for mild winter weather.

On Saturday, February 2, skiers can compete in jumps during the Heavy Tools Freeskiing Challenge 2008 at Donovaly. This will also be the site of the annual open-air Donovaly Fest, a winter music festival, on the same day, featuring such Slovak bands as Desmond, Polemic, Hex and others.

On the weekend, the top European snowboarders will meet in Vrátna at the European Cup for Snowboarding.

Because on February 1 children will have a one-day holiday, slopes will be more than full during the long weekend. However, everything will depend on whether it snows or not. Therefore, we recommend looking up ski conditions in ski resorts at www.holidayinfo.sk.
