THE EXPLOSION of a grenade in an ammunition warehouse at the VOP military maintenance company in Nováky killed one person and injured three others on March 7, the SITA newswire reported.
The spokesperson for Slovakia’s Armed Forces, Milan Vanga, said that an unknown explosive was set off during an inventory of the facility that was being conducted because of suspicions that ammunition had gone missing.
Ladislav Gerlich of nearby Bojnice Hospital confirmed that two persons who had been transported from Nováky by the emergency rescue service had been admitted. One man was hospitalised while another received out-patient treatment.
This was the second recent fatal incident at VOP. A huge explosion killed eight people in 2007.
