CITY SUMMER FESTIVAL: Košické Leto 2018 – Košice, June 29-August 26

The urban summer festival brings music bands (Salónny orchester Cassovia; Robo Opatovský & Band, etc.), folklore, theatre groups, capoeira (martial arts) (Capoeira Oxumare), family barbecues, and an operetta gala, from the end of June to late August.

LONG HIKING TAIL: Prechod SNP Nízkymi Tatrami (SNP Hike across the Low Tatras) – Telgárt-Špania Dolina, July 1-7

The 54 th year of the international Prechod SNP Nízkymi Tatrami (SNP Hike across the Low Tatras) offers a chance to follow in the footsteps of World War II rebels from the Slovak National Uprising (SNP) across the Low Tatra mountains for 163 kilometres with a total altitude difference of 6,887 metres. Meant only for hikers older than 14. The bus to the start at Telgárt leaves from Banská Bystrica (Kaufland near railway station) July 1 at 10:00 and 11:00; from Špania Dolina at 9:00. HISTORICAL FESTIVAL: Pribinova Nitrawa 2018, Nitra Castle, July 4-5

The historical festival hailing the times of Great Moravia in the city that used to be its centre – Nitra – offers several novelties, like the “live chess” performed by members of historical re-enactment groups, including duels. Also new are a torch duel on the evening of July 4, period teahouse, theatre performance, mediaeval puppetry, and a show by the historical archery group with commentary. During the festival, which culminates on the Sts Cyril and Methodius holiday, July 5, more than 100 performers will bring the Middle Ages, between the 8 th and 13 th centuries, back to life in camps of Slavs and Templars, through a period market, re-enacted duels, mediaeval cuisine, two historical processions and more.

TRADITIONAL CRAFTS FESTIVAL: EĽRO, European Folk Craft Festival – Kežmarok, July 6-8

In this traditional festival, more than 180 craftsmen and folk artists from Slovakia and foreign countries demonstrate up to 50 various crafts for visitors. Their handmade products can be bought at the festival. The programme includes folk music and dance (the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, France, Italy, Serbia, Russia, or Spain – even Hong Kong), historical fencing and dances, special guided tours of the Kežmarok Castle, theatre performances, early and period music, knight duels, falconry shows, puppet theatre, creative workshops, exhibitions, rides on a historical steam engine train, demonstration of smithery, and more. Opening on July 6 at 12:50 with a town procession and re-enactment of the castle’s conquest, the festival lasts until 17:00 on Sunday. It also includes special concerts by Václav Neckář and Bacily, gala-concert Royal Strings (Kráľovské Sláčiky) and Katka Knechtová in the wooden articular church, plus more.

TRUCK RACE: OMV MaxxMotion Truck Race of Slovakia + FIA WTCR Race of Slovakia – Slovakia Ring Orechová Potôň, July 13-15

Slovakia Ring hosts the European Championship OMV MaxxMotion Truck Race of Slovakia for the second time, with the trailer truck races being among the most popular. The world cup FIA WTCR race will premiere here, after the WTCC and TCR series merged. During this weekend, racers famous from WTCC including Matej Homola will be taking part and be available for autographs.

MUSIC FESTIVAL: Showcase 2018 - Hev Het Fest Košice, Kasárne Kulturpark, July 17-18

This two-day festival brings a combination of 12 concerts and many accompanying events, e.g. a presentation of technology. ShowCase concerts include, on July 17 at Kasárne/Kulturpark, Kukučínova 2, Alfa pavilion, Tommy Caggiani (IT, ESP) Pavel Jakub Ryba & Petr Valášek (CZ), Sundial (PL), NOCZ quartet (NO, CZ), Improvision quartet (PL), and the main concert KK Pearls (Krzysztof Kobylińsky) with French trumpeter Eric Truffaz (FR, PL, ISR, UKR, COL). On July 18 at 15:00 – 15:45 David Kollar & Arve Henriksen have a lecture and debate on recording, mixing and mastering and concerts begin at 16:00 at Kasárne/Kulturpark, Kukučínová 2, Alfa pavilion with Linda Kovacs trio (HU), Szymon Mika trio (PL), Marta Kloučková band (CZ), Pit Dahm trio (LX), Kamil Piotrowicz sextet (PL), and the main star, David Kollar & Arve Henriksen (SK, NO).

GASTRONOMY: Halušky Turecká Fest 2018 – Slovak and European Championship in Cooking and Eating Bryndzové Halušky, Turecká, July 13-14

The Slovak and European Championship in cooking and eating the national meal, bryndzové halušky, takes place for the 24 th year in the village of Turecká. On Friday, the Kollárovci band will play while the main competition is scheduled for Saturday.

CLASSICAL MUSIC FESTIVAL: Festival Peknej Hudby 2018 (Festival of Nice Music), Banská Štiavnica, July 26-29

The summer festival of classical music takes place in historical venues in the centre of the mining town Banská Štiavnica. This year it consists of a recital by Jana Boušková on harp, Slovak Chamber Orchestra with Eugen Prochác on cello playing Ilja Zeljenka, Vivaldi, Gireg and Mozart; Clara Nováková on flute and Monika Knoblochová on harpsichord playing Czech composers; Matúš Jakabčic CZ-SK Big Band & Peter Lipa with Ester Wiesnerová; Lento Ad Astra with Erik Rothenstein on sax and Zita Slavíčková on piano; and Czecho-Slovak Cello Quartet (Aleš Kaspřík, Petr Nozovský, Eugen Prochác and Ján Slávik) playing various Czech and Slovak composers.

HIP-HOP/DANCE FESTIVAL: The Legits Blast 2018 – Banská Bystrica, July 21, 26, 28

The 9 th year of the international hip-hop/break-dance festival The Legits Blast includes projects Outbreak Europe and Undisputed, Rep Your Country, and HLM Anniversary, Catch the Flava Breaking Camp, Catch the Flava Street Styles Camp, the renewed Youth is the Future a sub-project Streetdance Battle for dancers, graffiti, dance workshops, and more. This time around the festival venue is moving, due to ever more visitors from more than 70 countries, to the Aqualand swimming area. The youth project takes place in Europa SC shopping mall. JAZZ MUSIC FESTIVAL: Trnavský Jazzyk 2018 – Trnava, July 30-Aug 3

The 15 th year of the open-air jazz festival takes place in the 780 th anniversary of Trnava’s town privilege charter, and so admission is free for all this year. The line-up includes (July 30, 19:30) Swing Society Orchestra; (July 31, 19:30) Miloš Biháry & Jazz Funk Brothers; (August 1, 19:30) Fehero Rocher; (August 2, 19:30) Ľudové mladistvá – all in the Courtyard of the Space for Contemporary Culture; and (August 3, 19:00) Oskar Rózsa Partnership Unlimited and Avishai Cohen “1970” in the city amphitheatre.
