Pellegrini: I don’t want a divisive Slovakia, the murder should not divide society anymore

Ahead of the planned gatherings taking place around Slovakia tonight, PM Peter Pellegrini is calling for pthe eaceful commemoration of murdered journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée Martina Kušnírová.

He also wished for the murder not to divide society anymore, he does not want a divisive Slovakia, he stated in a video published on his Facebook profile.

“Let’s commemorate the murdered peacefully,” he said in the video one year after the double murder. “It is a memento and dignified message that we all wish for such events never to happen in our society again.”

This tragic event shook Slovakia, Pellegrini said. It was a brutal act against two young people and against one of the pillars of Slovakia's young democracy – freedom of speech.

He repeated that the murder investigation is one of the priorities of his government. He thanked the investigators and prosecutors for their work.

Punishing and sentencing the perpetrators

The police also published their own video to mark the first anniversary of the murder that has forever inscribed itself in Slovak's history in black, as the video puts it.

Police Corps President Milan Lučanský thanked all the police officers participating in the investigation. He also wished for as many journalists as possible like Ján Kuciak.

“I would like to thank the team and the people who working in it,” Lučanský said in the video, also thanking the prosecutors for the way they are leading the investigative team.

“I want to assure everyone that this team has my support and we will do everything to punish and sentence the perpetrators,” he added.
