Kuchajda, a lake in Bratislava created from what was once a gravel pit, remains a recreational space with considerable untapped potential. Now, the local government in Nové Mesto, the city borough where the lake is located, is moving forward with plans to transform the area into a vibrant destination for sports, culture and leisure.
Last year saw the first steps in this revitalisation effort, including the renovation of the site's basketball court and the opening of a new climbing wall. Building on that momentum, the borough is preparing for further enhancements in 2025.
The centrepiece of this year’s development will be the construction of a new running track. Mirroring the design of the popular track at Štrkovec Lake – another former gravel pit – the new oval will trace the lake’s perimeter along a course of about 1.5 kilometres.
“We’re also working on enhancing the swimming season by upgrading site amenities, and we’re planning a competition to select new catering vendors,” said Nové Mesto Mayor Matúš Čupka, as quoted by the SITA newswire.
New entrance planned
Among the more visible improvements will be a new entrance to Kuchajda, planned for the corner of Vajnorská and Junácka Streets. The lake will continue to host cultural and social events throughout the year, with several already in the pipeline.
Another new feature, a skatepark, will be officially handed over by the Slovak Olympic Committee on Wednesday, April 30. Just a few days later, on May 3, the area will host a large public sports festival.

Name rooted in pastureland
The name “Kuchajda” is derived from the German Kuhheide, meaning “cow pasture” – a nod to the land’s original use for cattle grazing. Later transformed into a gravel pit, the area eventually gave way to a lake through gradual dredging and the rise of groundwater.
Following the introduction of a nearby tram service in 1944, Kuchajda became a popular leisure spot for Bratislava residents. Over the years, it has evolved into a natural swimming lake and urban retreat.
Today, the site features a 1,454-metre walking trail, popular with runners and pedestrians alike, as well as playgrounds, sports courts, and green areas. Easily accessible via public transport, Kuchajda is located near the Bratislava-Nové Mesto railway station and the Vivo! shopping centre.
