Smer has a new number one on its list of election candidates

Fico has drawn up Smer's list for the 2020 election but has not yet disclosed whether he will appear on it.

Who will be the number one on Smer’s candidate list in the upcoming 2020 general election? The media have learnt that the party’s chairman Robert Fico has proposed incumbent PM Peter Pellegrini to take the top slot.

“It is within the full competence of Robert Fico to propose the list of candidates,” said Ján Mažgút, Smer’s spokesperson, as quoted by the TASR newswire. “He is going to use this right and has proposed that Peter Pellegrini lead it.”

Pellegrini has accepted the offer. Fico, however, did not state whether he himself will run in the elections or what his position on the candidate list will be.

Choosing Pellegrini as an election leader is a pragmatic decision and Fico could not have made a better one, political analyst Tomáš Koziak commented.
