Fico's condition remains serious
Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer) is currently in a serious health condition following the attack on Wednesday (May 15), President-elect Peter Pellegrini (Hlas) announced after visiting the premier at the F.D. Roosevelt Hospital in Banská Bystrica on Thursday afternoon.
Doctors were able to stabilise his condition, however, his life remains in danger.
"The prime minister narrowly escaped death," said Pellegrini, adding that his most difficult hours and days are awaiting him. The premier is able to speak, but can only manage a few sentences, according to Pellegrini. He is very tired, he noted.
The day after the shooting of the prime minister, the Security Council and the government also held meetings. It was agreed upon to enhance the protection of constitutional officials and other groups and individuals who may be at risk, including journalists. No state of emergency will be declared.
Also, the police charged the attacker with revenge homicide.
Related: "The attack on Robert Fico is an attack on all of us. It is a path of hatred that cannot control Slovakia, because it will move us to the darkest places on the map," reads a statement published by the editors-in-chief of Slovak media outlets.
