Volunteers from a private company have transported and installed nearly 80 oak beams along trails and bridges in Jánošíkove diery – a well-known destination in the Malá Fatra mountain range, near the village of Terchová.

A helping hand in the heart of Europe offers a travel guide to Slovakia.

The bridges are gradually deteriorating due to the large number of visitors and the effects of the weather. Some of the older beams were either damaged or missing entirely, according to the MY Žilina regional newspaper.

Local residents regularly help to maintain the safety and accessibility of the gorge’s trails, carrying out minor repairs and installing various support structures in their free time. The mountain rescue service could potentially close certain sections to the public if damaged beams are not replaced.

The most at-risk section at present is the stretch between Biely Potok and Ostrvné, located at the entrance to the gorge and therefore used most frequently.
