DÁVID Havetta from the southern Slovak town of Šaľa creates sculptures out of a unique material - used chewing gum. So far, his gum creations - including a David and an Aphrodite - decorate his house only. But he hopes the appeal will broaden once his sticky art enters the Guinness Book of Records.
"I quit smoking several years ago and started chewing gum," Havetta says. "I began to stick the gum I was finished with on a holder, and only later discovered that the old gum made a good, malleable material. The first gum sculpture I made was the head of a woman, but then I began to make her body from the top down. You can create anything from gum."
Havetta has been practising his hobby for over nine years. His collection now consists of eight works; an average 20-centimetre figure requires about 300 pieces of discarded gum.
