National Month of Mexico
Born in Hamburg, Austria, photographer Christa Cowrie moved to Mexico at the age of 14 to study Spanish, then married a Mexican man, started a family and worked as a photo-journalist in Mexico. Her works will now be on display at a photo exhibition entitled Echoes of Mexico, featuring images of ordinary Mexicans in 23 black and white photographs. Cowrie's photos also reveal her concern with ecological issues and with icons of Mexican cultural life which are in danger of extinction, while other scenes show Tarahumara Indians carrying wood or women baking tortillas. The exhibition opens at 16:00 on Wednesday, September 5, and runs at the Focus Gallery on Štúrova 9 (near the Tesco department store in Bratislava) until the end of September. For more information, call tel: 02/ 5296-4192.
