* The American Chamber of Commerce is organizing an Amcham June Business Cocktail, which will take place at the Panorama Room of Hotel Danube on June 25, starting at 6pm. Though tasty hors-d'oeuvres and punch that packs a wallop are on the house, Amcham hopes that patrons have other reasons to come as well. Those who can't make it can join the 4th Annual Independence Day Celebration held at the Bernolakovo Golf and Country Club on Saturday, July 4 at 6pm. Activities include the Corporate Challenge, a golf tournament, tennis, an American style barbeque, a country rock band called "The Grasshoppers" and a reggae band that bills themselves "Polemic," children's activitiesa and, finally, fireworks at 10:15pm. * Jazz lovers should pay a visit to Peter Cardarelli, an American jazz musician making the rounds of Slovakia. Many may already have seen his great jazz concert which was held June 6 in Piešťany at the Café Grand. Besides Cardarelli, the Czech František Raba and Slovaks Gabriel Jonáš and Oldo Petráš put on a show to celebrate the launch of their new CD - Mister Knight. Ralph Johnson, the US Ambassador, was also present to pour champagne on the CD. The CD features live concerts recorded in Studio S in Bratislava in April 1998. The music is be-bop jazz, very relaxing easy on the ears.
Cardarelli, a professor in the Applied Music Program at the University of Massachusetts-Boston, currently lives in Slovakia and plays with Slovak jazz musicians such as Andrej Šeban or Peter Lipa. Having lived in Slovakia for 1 year, Cardarelli is planning a tour of Slovak towns during June, and will participate in the Bratislava Summer of Culture (for more information, see What's up in Blava, this page). Cardarelli will play on June 19 at Martinské divadlo in Martin, June 20 at the Grand Hotel in Banská Štiavnica, June 21 at the Czech Center on Nám. SNP in Bratislava, June 22 in Bojnice, June 23 at the Grand Café in Piešťany, and then June 25 at Prašná Bašta restaurant and June 28 in Klarisky Church, both in Bratislava. Come out and see an important part of Slovak jazz history in the making!
* ArtFilm - the 6th annual Trenčianske Teplice International Film Festival - June 19-26 - is an independent festival of feature and documentary films about art and artists. Geraldine Chaplin, who will present her latest movie Mother Theresa, will participate on the international jury along with other film makers and actors. The program highlights international cinematography such as Czech, French, British, Swedish and Hungarian.
