Meteorite returns to Slovakia
YOUNG theatre actors have prepared a rich dramatic experience to be staged at the second annual international art festival Meteorite in Kolárovo, near Komárno, between June 2 and 9.
Starting May 29, children can visit a "fairy-tale town" in a tent erected near the local sports hall.
The large tent, local culture centre, open-air stage in the town's park and surroundings will see artists performing from various countries.
Among the guests is the Teatr Novogo Fronta from the Czech Republic, Maska from Poland, Inner World from Slovenia, Schauspielhaus from Austria and Varietäter from Switzerland. Professionals will alternate with performances by physically or mentally-handicapped actors.
The festival will offer several dance-theatrical productions from the Dance Studio Banská Bystrica, Somi Panni and Sivasakti Kalánanda. Several exhibitions by Hungarian, Slovak and Polish artists are also on display, as is a classical Indian dance, plays for children and music concerts.
The organizers prepared the festival in cooperation with Central European Foundation.
Halušky championships
THE TWELFTH annual bryndzové halušky eating and cooking championship will take place on June 3 in Turecká, near Banská Bystrica. Organisers expect over 40 teams to turn up for the contest, including Czech participants.
"Political parties Free Forum and HZDS [The Movement for a Democratic Slovakia, led by former PM Vladimír Mečiar] have also shown interest in sending teams," said the event's main referee, Milan Holák. "We expect other parties to do so as well. They are welcome, but we don't want the championships to turn into a pre-election publicity stunt."
The four-member teams will be judged on how fast they can prepare bryndzové halušky (sheep cheese dumplings) from two kilograms of peeled potatoes. First, the chef will grate the potatoes, while others make a fire, mix the bryndza and roast bacon. In the second part of the competition, each team has to eat 3.5 kilos of halušky as fast as possible.
Teams will be disqualified for breaking the rules, such as wounding one's fingers while grating the potatoes or not keeping to the exact process. The event will be enriched with a cultural programme.
