Film director Hanák awarded for lifework

RENOWNED Slovak director Dušan Hanák received a prize for lifetime achievement, Award to the Career, at the Bergamo International Film Festival in Italy on June 24. His 1972 film Pictures of the Old World was also screened on the town's quaint Piazza Vecchia, which hosts the event.

Representing Slovakia this year were Marko Škop and Juraj Johanides, whose documentary Slávnosť osamelej palmy (The Celebration of the Lonely Palm) was entered into the festival's main competing section. The documentary talks about "almost forgotten" film director Elo Havetta, who made two acclaimed films during Communism. Other Slovak films will be shown within the short film section.

Hanák will soon receive another prize when Polish director Andrzej Wajda and he are awarded the Golden Camera at the 14th annual Art Film Festival in Trenčianske Teplice (June 23-July 1) for their contribution to world cinema.
