The period of fašiangy, a Slavic festival full of food, fun and joy, will be coming to an end at the beginning of March. It started on the Epiphany, January 6, but draws to a close on Ash Wednesday. It falls on March 6 in 2019. Until now, Slovaks have been enjoying over the fašiangy period pig slaughters in the countryside, weddings, parties and various carnivals with masks and costumes. Who knows, if you manage to visit a place outside Bratislava before March 6, you may still experience a bit of the fašiangy spirit. For instance, this video portrays fašiangy in Pribylina, near Liptovský Mikuláš in central Slovakia.
The holiday of fun and abundance will be swapped for 40 days of Lent soon. Nevertheless, there are still many interesting and exciting events coming up in March.

1) Europa Cup 2019
In 2014, Slovak skier Petra Vlhová won gold in the slalom at the Junior World Championships at the ski resort Jasná. She recently scored at the Alpine World Ski Championships, taking silver in the combined, gold in the giant slalom and bronze in the slalom. Come to Jasná, site of the ladies' alpine ski Europa Cup, on the first weekend of March to cheer her on!

2) ZIMOMRAVENIE
A unique family festival, Zimomravenie (goosebumping), which has been around since 2010, offers a variety of events for children to help families in Slovakia spend more time together. The whole city of Banská Štiavnica gets involved in the festival. Apart from the local Culture Centre, where numerous theatre performances are shown all afternoon, children can participate in various workshops and games (e.g. funny selfies, wheel of fortune, board games, planetarium). The Slovak Mining Museum in Banská Štiavnica will, for example, run a workshop on how to pan for gold. And games will be waiting for children also at the Old Castle. This is, in fact, important! At five o'clock on March 2, the King of Zimomravenie awards all the children that come to play in Banská Štiavnica.

3) Wojciech Jagielski
Polish journalist Wojciech Jagielski arrives in Trnava to promote his book All Lara's Wars (Wszystkie wojny Lary), which recounts the story of a woman who has been through three wars. Because of two wars in Chechnya, her dream of becoming an actor fade away. In the war in Syria, she lost her two sons. Jagielski is often compared with Ryszard Kapuściński, father of Polish reportage. Jagielski has experienced 53 war conflicts and has written about Georgia, Uganda, South Africa and Afghanistan to name a few, just like Kapuściński. Come listen to the intriguing stories of Wojciech Jagielski, which are part of the festival focusing on reportage literature.

4) DESIGN FORUM
Design Forum is one part of the Furniture & Living exhibition in Nitra devoted to the works of students. (source: TASR)
"Furniture and Living" is an international trade fair devoted to furniture, accessories, design and architecture, taking place in the first days of March at the Agrokomplex national exhibition centre in Nitra. At the same time, visitors can attend the fair of modern and traditional architecture of wood. Plus, students from six Slovak and Czech universities regularly exhibit their vision of furniture within the Design Forum exhibition. This time, all the three exhibitions ask in what way our lifestyle impacts our living and what furniture we really need. If you are obsessed with interior design, or you just moved into a new place, this is the right place to discover new trends and designs for yourself.

5) Winter JazzFest
The Winter JazzFest in Trnava takes place for the fourth time. This year, it will bring Miloš Bihary Jazz Funk Brothers Orchestra (SK) to Trnava. Well, Bihary does not have to travel a long distance as he is a local, unlike his fellow "brothers". In addition, Marko Churnchetz from Slovenia will come, joined by double-bass player Joe Sanders and drummer Kweku Sumbry. As well, Grammy-nominated singer Jonathan Hoard is to perform with them.

6)Scéna_FM ŠPECIÁL

for lovers of music and the mountains, a special event brings the two together in the Rotunda cable car station complex over 2,000 metres above sea level, on Mt. Chopok at ski resort Jasná. Just imagine dancing while observing breathtaking views of some of Slovakia's mountain peaks. And who is to play? Critically acclaimed Fallgrapp and Vi3e. DJ Yanko Kral and DJ Galagha will also take over the show with their sets. They present their show on Radio_FM, a popular alternative music Slovak radio station, every Friday but this time they will move from the studio to Rotunda. Remember you can reach Rotunda only by getting in the cable car from the northern side of Mt. Chopok (Biela Púť).

7) Intermezzo
Civic organisation InMusic has organised the third concert of the cycle focusing on chamber concerts in Banská Štiavnica. It is called Intermezzo, and Ensemble Ricercata of four members will introduce visitors to Brahms, Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Schubert, C. Schumann and R. Schumann on March 16. Besides, the civic organisation runs the 'InMusic TALKS' discussion and screening of the film on music on March 15 at 19:00. Stop by Art Café in Banská Štiavnica if you think this is an event you would enjoy. Either way, Banská Štiavnica is the most picturesque town in Slovakia where everyone wants to go to but no one wants to leave. A mid-March weekend may be a good time to discover classical music alongside the town.

8) Cultur Dinner

9) Vitis Aurea
Modra, near Bratislava, is a picturesque town with a rich history of wine-growing and wine-making. Besides, it is a town devoted to one of Slovakia's greatest leaders Ľudovít Štúr, who is an author of the Slovak literary language, among other things. Modra is also world-famous for its pottery. There are many reasons to visit the town anytime but, if you are a wine lover, set out for a trip to Modra at the end of March. The local society of wine-growers and wine-makers have organised the international wine exhibition VITIS AUREA for the nineteenth time. Where else would you celebrate the "drink of gods" if not in one of its production hubs in Slovakia?

10)Out of the Circle & Miller Exhibit

The Mill Exhibit presents the development of milling in the Little Carpathians from the 18th century until the 1950s. The historic site has been preserved in its original state, including the architecture and equipment. The mill, which is now part of the Slovak National Gallery, was built in 1767. You can also find farm buildings there, like a barn, stable, granary and a sty. Once you are there, explore contemporary Slovak pottery, which is housed in the mill.
