IN AMERICA presidents can only be honoured with a stamp after they are dead. However, the same is not true of Slovakia. A second stamp with President Ivan Gašparovič's image was issued on June 15.
Gašparovič is the third Slovak president since the country gained independence in 1993. He follows in the footsteps of Michal Kováč and Rudolf Schuster, whose images have also appeared on Slovak postal stamps.
As in the case of his predecessors, Gašparovič's stamp is the work of Martin Činovský. The internationally known designer and engraver introduced his signature style in the first postal stamp issue following Slovak independence. This featured the state's distinctive coat of arms.
A student of Albín Brunovský, Činovský is responsible for many stamps issued in Slovakia over the last decade. His works have received several international and domestic awards.
President Gašparovič's stamp can be purchased at Slovak post offices for Sk9.
