MANY SLOVAK cities still boast a number of interesting old town gates that recall the time when the cities were flanked with massive ramparts.
As the only way in or out of the majority of cities, the town gates were a crucial part of fortifications.
This colour postcard from 1920 depicts the Lower Gate in Trenčín, also known as the Turkish Gate or, more recently, the City Tower, which was built in 1543.
On the left side, a turreted house is adjoined to the 32-metre tower. It served as a town hall from 1663 to 1933. Before then, Trenčín’s mayor worked from home.
