The Slovak Hydrometeorological Office (SHMÚ) detected record values at Topolčany in Nitra region, where average day air temperature reached 30 degrees Celsius, thus breaking former record from July 22, 2007, when 29.8 degrees Celsius (85.64 Fahrenheit) was recorded in Vysoká nad Uhom village.
“If average day air temperature reaches 30 degrees Celsius and more, it’s an extraordinary event in Slovakia’s environmental conditions,” climatologist Pavel Faško writes on SHMÚ internet website, as quoted by TASR.
That very reading was recorded on Wednesday at roughly one-fifth of meteorological stations across Slovakia.
Readings of 30 degrees Celsius average day temperatures and higher have been detected by the network of SHMÚ meteorological stations since the second half of the 20th century only in 1957, 1988, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2012, 2013 and 2015. Most of these came in 2007 - namely, 32 (stations). From this viewpoint, the year 2015 is becoming quite competitive with 2007, according to SHMÚ.
As for maximum air temperatures on July 22, the mercury rose to 38.2 degrees Celsius (or over 100 Fahrenheit) in the southern town of Dudince in Banská Bystrica region, with Hurbanovo in Nitra region coming a close second with 37.9 degrees Celsius.
“In Dudince, it was only about one tenth of a degree less than statewide record of maximum day temperature for July 22,” said Faško, referring to Vysoká nad Uhom, where 38.3 degrees Celsius were recorded on this day eight years ago.
