Nicknamed the Red Steamer, the Greenhouse, or Slovak Centre Pompidou, the Nová Tržnica market hall on the outskirts of the very centre of Bratislava has been serving its purposes for more than 40 years. Its heyday is already history and its administrator, the Nové Mesto borough, is looking for ways to return life to this special building with the recently obtained label of a national protected monument.
“The Nová Tržnica market hall has potential and we are working on finding the right partners to help us make the most of it,” Mária Vencelová, electronic media officer at the Nové Mesto municipal office, told The Slovak Spectator.
The market hall on Trnavské Mýto Square, one of the few market halls across Slovakia, has been serving its purpose for 41 years, since October 1983. It was built to replace the open-air market. The hall was moved to Miletičova Street to make space for the now demolished Istropolis congress hall. It used to stand just opposite the market hall.

The market hall was designed by architect Ivan Matušík, who also designed the Hotel Kyjev and the adjacent Prior department store. He collaborated on the market hall with civil engineer Pavel Čížek.
The building is property of the Bratislava city council and administered by the municipal company EKO – podnik VPS of Nové Mesto borough.
