FINALLY the time has come when I can really say that Slovakia has the winter weather typical for February. Snow is covering the whole area of the country and 60 cm of new snow has fallen in some places in the mountains. Strong, gusty winds, however, have blown the snow from the slopes in some places and created icy spots. The most ideal conditions are on tracks through the forests, where the wind is not so strong.
Spring holidays are here already and the ski centres are getting livelier. Despite that, you should not wait more than five minutes for a lift.
Snow showers will continue this week. Temperatures in the mountains should remain below zero during the day and go down to – 10 at night. A little warming can be expected on St. Matthew’s day (February 24), in accordance with the Slovak saying Matej ľady láme alebo ich vytvára (Matthew breaks the ice or creates it).
This week again offers special events at many resorts. Newschool Battle 2009 in Donovaly on February 28 will show free style jumps, and not only on skis. Tatranská Lomnica will host another round of Tatra Ski league 2009 on February 27, giving everyone an opportunity to test their time in the slalom. Milka Funpark is something very special for children in Veľká Rača on February 28 and March 1. The Furkota slope in Štrbské Pleso should finally open this week which should significantly improve the quality of skiing in this centre.
